    Blue Sea dual battery troubleshooting

Something isn't right. It seems like both batteries aren't being charged when you run the boat, which that set up should do automatically. That's supposed to be the whole point of that system, that you don't have to alternate between 2 batteries like you do with the simple 1, 2, Both and Off...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Do a search on my user name I have posted a few times, how to set up the Cobra shift linkage. First make sure it is full of gear oil, remove the top cap, inspect the upper gears. Then while someone else turns the driveshaft clockwise, use the shifter rod that goes into the lower gear unit, to...

    Quadrajet Secondaries Problem

Join the forum and post your question saying it is for a marine application and what your altitude is. Someone (likely Cliff himself) will respond, he does do marine carbs. Either that, or get a new Edelbrock since Mercruisers were rigged with the very similar Weber carb so you'd be able to get...

    Quadrajet Secondaries Problem

For one let’s keep in mind that there have not been any truly new Quadrajet carbs since 1990, anything after that is remanufactured if you’re buying it from someone else and that can be a crap shoot. Good, bad, anything in between. So there’s that. I have an original QJet that I’ve rebuilt a...

Flappers are at the top of the Y pipe hidden by the rubber exhaust hoses. They will melt & fall down inside the Y pipe if you have an overheat. These are a hold over from the original OMC Cobra design. Volvo said that they felt they weren’t effective & could block the exhaust if melted. They...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Ok that hole looks ok in that pic. Rusty water is probably from internal rust on the old cast iron engine & exhaust system. BTW there is much debate on this forum about the value of filling the engine & exhaust manifolds with no tox antifreeze after draining for winterization. Some just drain...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Yes its a cone clutch and that Volvo SX is the equivalent of the Merc Bravo in strength they were used behind Chevrolet 454s so no worries on that end. While you could convert it to a Mercruiser it would be very expensive although you wouldn't have to do any transom work. Since you have a Ford...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

The first couple of years they called it the Volvo SX Cobra, then they dropped the Cobra and it was just the SX. The whole deal was like this....OMC ran into financial problems in the '90s with the Cobra shift cable recall and the Evinrude Ficht problems. Volvo wanted OMC's transom design...

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

thought so well that's just Edelbrock's way of making you an expert on these things lol. like I learned with the Quadrajet I have a Sierra pump (old style mechanical) on mine that is working fine

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

Other than the fact that the fuel pressure is too high for a carbed engine, it is possible that on the Edelbrock carb one of the floats can hang up against the inside of the float bowl. I recall a post on this forum about this very problem. The Edelbrock has 2 floats one on each side. Is this...

That’s definitely the joint venture drive made by Volvo; parts are the same as the Volvo. Get a new prop that’s going to cause vibrations. The drive not staying up is likely a valve inside the trim pump. That’s a problem I haven’t had yet though so can’t help on repairs. One thing I can suggest...

    Changing my boat gauges.

If you have one of those old original fuse boxes with the glass fuses check the tabs for oxidation; I had this problem one year & none of the gauges came on & engine didn’t crank. Fuse was not blown it was simply oxidation. Did the old gauges work right?

Brake drum and bearing cap questions

If a trailer has 2 3500 lb axles and only one had brakes that’s only rated at being able to stop 3500 lbs. yet the trailer in total could weigh as much as 7,000 lbs. A pair of 10” brakes on a trailer that size & potential weight is frightening.

Water in Oil (Again) Head Scratcher

That 11 ft lbs always seemed too loose to me yet I know that’s what GM specified. The pre Vortec was 30-35 ft lbs. Just seemed odd for it to be 1/3 what the pre Vortec was. Was there that much a difference deference in the gaskets? I never had one problem with the gaskets on the pre Vortec
