Engine making new sound? Can I still use it?

That sound combined with the obvious miss suggests a blown head gasket. Time for a mechanic.

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

Yep I had to take mine off to replace a leaky steering actuator about 4 years after I installed them and they came right off. My original one piece V6 manifolds on the OMC used zinc plated studs and nuts and guess what even in salt water I never had a problem removing them. Changed the exhaust...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

This is one of the differences between the original all OMC Cobra (1986-1993) and the joint venture with Volvo OMC Cobra (1994-1994). The original is placed in Neutral to pull the drive and then it just slides off because the shifter is in the pivot housing. On the joint venture Cobra which is...

Unable to identify serial number - Mercruiser 5.7 V8 Thonderbolt

If you’re changing the engine you can also look for the GM casting # on the bellhousing that will tell you exactly what you have. To be 100% sure check the casting # of the cyl heads as well. There are charts on line that can de-code these #s for you. With an older boat unless it’s the original...

If you have a roller trailer used in salt water....check this....

The local ramps are not anywhere near as nice as the town ramps. But the are close and convenient. They are all shallow, and unless you want to put your rear wheels and differential in salt water, that boat's not coming off the trailer if it's not high tide. Local conditions mean everything...

    My boat is being a boat . . .

Well that's good that the coolant overflow issue was really nothing... the newer boats have a vapor recovery system like cars have had for many years, I guess there can be issues with them, I had a few check engine lights over the years due to that. Fuel economy, well that's one reason why I...

If you have a roller trailer used in salt water....check this....

Not here you’d be stuck launching only at high tide. No tides steep ramps yeah the bunk is ok. Tides shallow ramps if you don’t have a power winch lots a luck. There is only one local ramp where you can easily use a bunk trailer here. The rest, all you see are roller trailers. When my brother...

If you have a roller trailer used in salt water....check this....

My trailer is a roller & my brother’s is a bunk. Our boats are about the same size & weight. On the nice steep & wide town ramp either works. On the shallow one I use at my local beach association it would be tough to get the boat off it with the bunk. There are pros & cons to either one. I...

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

Permatex Aviation or Evinrude gasket sealer. It will stop corrosion by sealing out moisture.

And the aftermarket provides all the parts unlike the shady OEMs! Even for a 35 year old Quadrajet!

    My boat is being a boat . . .

this is a great gadget for getting air out of cooling systems without making a mess, especially nice in a boat. Don't want to have the bilge pump kick on and discharge AF in the water! A few years ago I had a P/S actuator leaking and that was a constant worry till I fixed it! Lisle Radiator...

Did you check the gas tank vent & the anti siphon valve? With fuel system problems start with the basics first.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

https://www.michiganmotorz.com/5-8l-351-ci-ford-marine-engine This with a nice Holley 650 CFM carb would wake that boat up. Not sure what a Four Winns Sundowner weighs but I can tell you that my Four Winns 20' bow rider weighs in at 4200 lbs. Mine has a 4.3 V6 which is just adequate, it should...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

When you slide down the rubber hoses on the exhaust Y pipe, you can tell if there were flappers originally installed because there will be 2 holes on either side of the upper end of the Y pipe. If these are filled with silicone sealer someone did the V/P service bulletin and removed them. If...

    Reliable sure lube hubs

If you haven't owned this long then I'd take it all apart and inspect the bearings, races & seals, if replacement is necessary that's good time to do it. Otherwise beyond spinning the wheel and listening for bad noises, vibration & play etc. there's no way to know what condition they are in.

    Reliable sure lube hubs

I had these on my original axle on the Load Rite; the grease goes inside the axle tube.

    My boat is being a boat . . .

I could see if the pressure cap is allowing enough coolant out that you could wind up with a small amount of air in the cooling system that alone could cause the slight increase in running temp.

    My boat is being a boat . . .

That’s really not overheating though & when our Subaru overheated both times it pegged hot on the gauge. My boat even when the HGs were leaking never really overheated, it really depends on where the HG failure is.

    Looking at a 1987 Bayliner 2160 Hardtop ???

Agreed on both points frankly ANY 1987 ‘glass/wood composite boat is a risk for rot and a 3.0 in a 21’ boat is less than adequate. I have the 4.3 4bbl V6 Cobra in my 20’ FW and it’s adequate for a cruise speed of 25-30 mph but that’s about it. Ideally it should have a 5.7 4bbl. The Cobra drive...
