HP sizing on Chap 23 SSI

Our last boat was capable of a V6 but we opted for the little 3 liter 140 HP I4. Everybody poopoohs that motor and says its underpowered, etc. I could put 8 people in the boat (a butt in every seat - 4 adults and 4 pre-teens) and that boat would still jump out of the water. My son bought...

HP sizing on Chap 23 SSI

Several U-Tube videos are available to view. Boating Mag reviewed that boat, and it had a Volvo V-6 240 HP I/O. If you look at boats for sale, they all are equipped with a V-6, so that must be the price point that dealers are trying to achieve. 49 mph ain't too shabby. With 5-6 people you'd...

    1984 Chrysler 25hp sea king?

It's a Monky Ward SeaKing. They were made by OMC Gale Division up to the early 1970's, when they switched to Chrysler Marine for manufacture. They went out of business in 1984 when Chrysler sold the marine division. Yours was made between 1974 and 1977. Maintenance parts should still be...

Ran into a reef & 10 hour service

The difference is that it would be a crime to pound out a $20,000.00 motor rather than fixing it right. If pounding is "right", or the owner of the machine can't afford it, then I stand corrected.

Ran into a reef & 10 hour service

Pounding an old Mariner is no comparison to a brand spanking new 2021 Yamaha 200 HP.

    Tahoe boat question.

Higher end boats all have bolted hardware with backer plates. The manufacturing scheme is to install the parts onto the deck before it is attached to the hull. Then no access issues. Even my lower end Stingray had bolted cleats.

    Tahoe boat question.

I have added cleats before because I prefer 4 to a side. Believe me, its not an easy task to bolt and add backer plates, so if screwed in OEM %^*& is not suitable for you, look elsewhere. I have boated in FL as well. It's not calm and prissy all of the time, so no windshield will limit your...

Ran into a reef & 10 hour service

Its a brand new boat. Shortchanging it cheep would be foolish. Have the 10 hour service done as you had already planned, and have the dealer replace the lower unit at the same time. Submit the claim to your insurance company and happily pay the deductible. It's a learning experience...

    Stainless Steele or NO..

If you have a 14' tinny with a 9.9 you don't need SS. For all others, its worth the extra cost. Just my opinion.

    Tahoe boat question.

I agree the 18 would be a better value, but not completely because of the extra length. Having a sport boat without a windshield would be a non-starter. Eventually you will be out on a cold day, or it may start to sprinkle a little bit. Once that happens the wife won't want to go along the...

    New Seat COvers on PWC

When you put "seat covers" on a car they go over the existing seat. Then, when you sell the car you pull them off and the interior looks like new. For a PWC its not an add-on, its the seat itself, so to speak. You remove the existing fabric and then install the new parts with a staple gun and...

    Replacing keel roller with boat

That's the opposite of what needs to be done. The rollers are at the other end.

    Long shaft vs short shaft

The best 15 HP LS online is $2735 with free shipping. You won't find a local dealer that will beat that. Its just a little shallow 12 footer. If you look at the pic and try to scale the transom to the bunks (probably twobafores) or the trail lights, it looks SS to me. But that's just an...

Yes, its a '36 Sportwin 2.5 HP. Hunn's book is an invaluable resource for the collector. Below is a pic of SN 03339.

    Long shaft vs short shaft

Boats that are suited for a 15 HP motor more often than not are short shaft. Not always, but more often than not. In my neighborhood, finding a long shaft 15 would be a chore. I can't understand why a SS would be a problem. OTOH, you say you're cheap and don't have a lot of money. In that...

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

Ignore my post. I was thinking of another thread and posted in the wrong place. I'm sorry. Things have been tough the last few weeks. The holidays weren't great. So, now that I'm back on track, let me tell a story. As told to me, an old gent bought a brand new boat, motor and trailer, and...

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

Lots of cautious replies here, but the bottom line is that the boat is already half disassembled and had pieces removed and the boat is BROKEN. $500 is lunacy. Zero is even worse lunacy. It costs money to take stuff to the landfill....

19' to 21' Bowriders or Sport Decks

Bayliners have an age-old bad rap. Today they have been significantly improved and are not too bad. Outboards are the ONLY way to go - I agree We had a Stingray for 35 years (bought new). She worked well in heavy Lake Erie chop. Not much worse than our brand new SeaRay, which was basically...
