Clear water hose test is best done in the water, because with the muffs water can be mixed with air which will throw off your test results. Before you changed your old exhaust, were there rust trails? If so, it is possible that it could be left over from then, if you were getting a bit of salt...

water in engine, is it salvageable?

The problem you can have is the amount of time water was in the engine. Water in the engine oil damages bearings. So you could redo the head, put it together and wind up with an engine knock. My mechanic told me this when I was doing my top end overhaul a few years back, he said that you won't...

Almost forgot There’s another place water can get in with salt boats & this one is hidden unless you know where to look…the intake manifold…on Chevy V6s & V8s there is a water passage at the front of the manifold that connects to the front of each cyl head to allow hot water to escape. These can...

    Oil Analysis Poor Sample

Well here’s the thing. There are several possible ways that water in this case can get into the motor oil. Exhaust—this can happen if old exhaust components are left in service too long. I’m also boat in only salt water & replace the exhaust every 5-7 years. I have owned this boat 20 years and...

    Oil Analysis Poor Sample

If you’re getting water in the oil or antifreeze if your engine has closed cooling you definitely want to know that, if you’re going to keep the vehicle or boat. Those things can be corrected but if they aren’t eventually engine damage will be very significant. Water in the oil isn’t good for...

You boat in salt water? I see both sodium and fuel dilution, the sodium is likely from salt water intrusion. Your motor oil is also not in grade, it is below the level it should be in terms of viscosity. This is likely due to the fuel dilution. Is this a carbed engine, throttle body or EFI? If...

ECM Swap ? Plug and play ???

I don’t think it will make your boat slower if you choose your components carefully. You have a choice between Edelbrock & Holley carbs & would need a stand alone marine electronic ignition system like the Delco EST. I think repair cost & parts availability with carbs is much better than EFI...

Trailer Question - want to drill a new hole into the frame to move crossbar supporting wobble roller

Yep the frame is pretty thick so you really gotta take time & be patient drilling it. On my roller trailer I made sure the boat was properly supported then moved the axle till I got enough tongue weight. Here most use rollers due to water depth changes of 6’-7’ with the tides. My local ramp is...

Might be a good idea to pull your spark plugs and check for water intrusion; what else was out of range in your sample? Alu? Cu? Pb? Water? Etc

Usually there will be other clues as to why your iron content is high. I had this when my head gaskets were starting to leak and salt water was getting into the oil. Since I fixed it back in 2017 the level of iron has gone down, not as far as is optimal but still a lot better than it was. Causes...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

On second thought I wonder if you might have 2 exhaust valves stuck open on those 2 cyls, maybe from leaky exhaust if you had no overheating. yep i had the overheat in july 2013 didn't get water in cyls till end of aug 2016 however sodium (salt water cooled) showed up in an oil analysis before...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

That looks like severe overheat or lean fuel Mix/over propped Make sure to find & correct the cause. Top end overhaul on the SBC is a pretty easy job. Make sure to clean the cyl head bolt holes in the block with a thread chaser. I used Fel Pro marine head & intake gaskets when I did my V6 a few...

If you have a roller trailer used in salt water....check this....

So I was replacing the aluminum roller bar mounts on my old Load Rite with lower ones to get the boat a bit lower on the trailer. I found that the 1/2" diameter bolts were getting pretty rusted and deteriorated so I replaced all 4 of them (easy to get parts right from LR, order on their website...

    Second mortgage for a carb?

Exactly See what happens when you’re too young to have grown up with carbs? I had to rebuild: Solex 1bb (65 VW 1200 cc) Autolite 2100 (70 Ford 302) Keihin 3 bbl (1980 Honda 1335 cc) Never had to take apart the Rochester 2bbl on our 72 Chevy 350 or the QJet on our 75 Olds 350.

    Second mortgage for a carb?

Marine carbs use a J Tube for the bowl vent vs a straight vent on an auto carb. So if the float sticks or something jams the needle valve the fuel that backs up out of the vent will go down the venturi vs going on the outside of the carb on the intake. There are other differences as well.
