I have worked on more than 1 lower unit..-----With clutch dog in the forward position the pinion gear falls out.-----And falls into place when installing it !!---All easy.
I used to work in a precision machine shop.-----Drawings often have notes added.-----Buddy said that they now see -----" no material sourced from China is to be used " on the list.-----Domestic products are made by folks sticking to the code.
Remove propshaft and thrust bearing housing.----Re-install making sure it is " home " and then fit the pinion.----Should fall in place with ease.-----Was the shift rod properly set / adjusted ?-----Did you find damage on reverse gear and clutch dog ?
The 49 cubic inch block never had the issue.----The 56 cube engines from 86 and newer needed the tell tale moved.-----Have you tested the overheat horn ?
It is not TOO MUCH oil in the gas.------Do some trouble shooting.-----The motor may be running on 3 of 4 cylinders.-----Do not drop pitch on the props to gain RPM without knowing the reason.-----Have the motor run on a dyno to determine actual power output of the motor !!!
Know of a dealer that only sold small 4 strokes with electric start.-----Said that they were too busy to deal with the typical -----" My motor won't start phone calls "
Small 4 strokes sometimes need electric start.----Reason is that flywheel needs to turn once to get spark to 1 cylinder.----A 9.9 fires both cylinder for every turn of the crankshaft.
How did the motor run for you last season ?----The rev limiter does not kick in at 2000 RPM...----Do the trouble shooting.----Check spark.-----Post actual compression values.----May be running on 3/4 of 6 cylinders.
Helped a neighbor build a trailer about 30 years ago.----Did all the welding on it.----Saw it with the same 24' boat on it about 4 years ago.-----Still as strong as when it was made.
