RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

that's an unfortunate reality of old boat ownership...I had a running problem and shifting problem with my OMC Cobra both of which I tried to fix but back then I didn't have the knowledge to do so luckily there was still a very good OMC mechanic who fixed both (bought it in 2002, this was in...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

looks worse than mine, which has been in salt water 6 months of the year, for around 16/17 seasons!

    Mercruiser 4.3 alarm won’t stop

On these you fill from the bottom with the vent plug out on the drive & then when the gear oil appears at the vent; replace the plug & keep pumping till it fills the gear lube bottle. Pump slowly to allow air to escape. After running briefly re-check level in the bottle.

    Trailer surge brakes

Maintenance with discs is much easier. The first brakes I learned to repair were drum brakes on mid '60s VWs. Pretty simple, but my '70s American cars all had discs up front and drums on the rear. If I were using disc brakes on the trailer in our salt water here, I'd have to use stainless...

    Intake Manifold Gaskets

Also make sure to follow the correct torque procedure; those take way less torque than the pre Vortecs.

    Intake Manifold Gaskets

You said you had a 2004 Sea Ray correct in previous threads so those SHOULD be Vortec heads, how many bolt holes for the intake are in each head? If only 4 bolt holes then those are the right gaskets. Vortec had only 8 holes for the intake, 4 per head, pre-vortec had 12 bolt holes or 6 per head...

    Overheating Problem

The part you removed is the temp sending unit for your temp gauge. I suggest you get a shop manual & start reading. These are very simple systems

    Overheating Problem

You’re not getting anywhere enough water up to the impeller. The water should be shooting out of the manifold feed hose and the hose that goes from the impeller to the thermostat housing. Are you using good fitting muffs? They must fit tightly for the impeller to prime. You might have old...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 overheats

That’s how I did it. The tricky part is lining up the water tube. See if you can get someone else to help you; I was able to do it myself. The mechanics I used to use recommended splitting the drive & cleaning that area out every 5 seasons in salt water. So it’s a good thing to learn how to do.

Bought a house on the lake! Got to get the old boat up and running.

Very nice, I'd love to have one. Don't know why no one makes boats in that style any more. I don't want a center console or bowrider for my next boat up here in the northeast, I want a closed bow like that for when I go out into Long Island Sound. I've actually thought about having a 'glass...

I'd be very...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 overheats

That irregular o ring should be replaced each time you pull the drive; I coat it with marine grease to hold it in place while reinstalling the drive. While you’re at it check the driveshaft bellows carefully. If you need to split the drive I have a trick for that job! I'm still thinking your...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 overheats

That’s why I said to test it by taping over the water intakes and backfilling with water via the raw water intake hose. This is described in Volvos documentation on troubleshooting overheating. Post # 20. Like I said earlier I’d suspect Maine growth in the water intake area and possible rotted...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 overheats

The plastic ones, don't really go bad unless someone let the water in the raw water circuit freeze and then it cracks. The Cobra I have owned 20 years I have never had to replace it, I have a few spares just in case though ;)

    Trailer surge brakes

I've had the free backing drums for nearly 20 years and never had trouble backing up, the only troubles I've had is the wheel cyls seizing up and the same with the adjusters. Found a way to make both last longer so I didn't have to change to disc brakes. The last set I installed have the...

tape over drive water intakes with duct tape tilt drive up disconnect raw water intake hose at impeller housing have a helper watch under left side of pivot housing pour water in hose and see if it leaks out the left bottom part of the pivot housing, if so then it's probably cracked. The pic of...

    Exhaust pieces and parts

I found my one of melted ones in the exhaust outlet in the transom mount, the other was still on the pin that fits into the Y pipe. I had to pull the drive to get access and pulled the other melted one out with a 3 jaw grabber tool. With the drive removed I was able to see it looking through...
