Best way to gain a little speed with 40hp engine

other than spending lots of money and burning more fuel. what would you want to accomplish attempting to swap ECU's and parts? your pontoon wont go any faster.

    '85 Sierra 16.5' Fiberglass - Floor / Transom / New Layout

To give the new fiberglass something to mechanically bond to while removing all the coatings/contaminants to get to good solid glass. nothing finer than 40 grit. I normally use 24 grit if I am bonding anything to it. as compared to surface prep for spraying gel. that is between 40 and 80...

    Manual fuel pump restrictions?

NO a similar mechanical pump in a 1972 impalla wagon had to pull the fuel 22 feet from the tank thru smaller ID fuel line, as well as pull the fuel vertical up about 1-1/4 feet. the mechanical pump in good condition will suck in the walls of the tank a bit prior to starving the motor for fuel...

Best way to gain a little speed with 40hp engine

the prop on there is probably best. does it allow the motor to go to WOT RPM? only way to get any 2-log pontoon moving faster is to add a 3rd log, add lifting strakes to all the logs, and add a lot more hp. BTW, your pontoon boat will move between 16-18hp with anywhere between a 25-60hp...

    Mercruiser 305. Water in cylinder.

I'm leaning towards bad riser gasket or too much weight in the boat. (Could be cargo, could be water soaked flotation foam) Measure the SWL to riser dimension. Should be 14"+ Do the leak down test. May want to pull the elbows and inspect the flappers

Tachometer for 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt

Tiny tachs are ok. However any outboard 2 stroke tach will work What speed does your boat plane at? If you hover around that speed, you will burn more fuel than you would at WOT

Tachometer for 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt

You should be burning about 25 # of fuel per hour with a 50hp 2-stroke You will burn more getting up on plane

    Boat Load and HP Rating

More than 3hp will fold your raft In my teens/twenties I had an intex inflatable rated for 3.5 people and 3.5hp. a 3hp Eska and just me, giving it any throttle folded the boat and would almost swamp it. Even if I over-inflated it Abandoned the outboard, used a trolling motor and a group 24...
