MerCruiser 3.0 - loud metal noise when in gear

Yep that flange is what seals the bellows, so you need a new or used gimble housing. That is the Achilles heel of I/Os. The drive needs to be pulled at the end of each season to check the bellows for water, so you can fix it when it's still a small problem, way before it becomes a BIG problem.

    daily music fix

We'll have to agree, to disagree. They revived interest in rockabilly music when it was dormant for many years and turned a whole new generation on to Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, in addition to Buddy Holley and others. For that alone, they are like Gods to me. Brian Setzer does a Christmas...

No one was playing Rockabilly music when he burst the scene in 1981-1982, right out of Massapequa Long Island.

Best diet to lose the gut!!??

That's what works, highly processed carbs & sugars are the enemy, carbs when digested turns to sugar, which is stored as fat. Lean proteins, lots of vegetables, "good carbs" drink more water, not too much beer lol, etc. Doing this I've been able to get down to what I weighed when I was in high...

5.7 /Chevy 350 hard starting and stalling when idle

That block looks like it came out of an older (pre-1977) Chevrolet, because it was painted Chevrolet Orange and I know that GM started painting the engines in all one color after they started putting Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles and Olds engines in Pontiacs etc. However it also has center bolt...

Alignment after transom replacement 1989 Cobra

it's the same for a Cobra the gimble design is the same. Even uses the same bearing and alignment tool. I'd be wondering if something happened with your rear engine mounts.

    Oil Pan

those are probably mecrusier #s, the GM casting # which is what you need is usually in the area where the bellhousing bolts on to the block, look on both sides, there is also a serial number stamped on the block right were the starboard side head is bolted on in the front. This is a 4.3 your...

    Oil Pan

I have the original tin pan on mine, it is still in good shape because I sprayed it with corrosion x or boeshield every other season, boat has been on a salt water mooring for 20 seasons. You can make the steel pans last, just scuff the original paint, brush on 2 coats of rustoleum primer...

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

Agreed I'd be pulling the manifold, and looking inside. The boat does not look like it was used in salt water, but you never know till you check. That way you'd see if it was from the manifold or cylinder head. I might want to do an oil analysis to see if water is in the oil, if so change it.

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

Perhaps misfiring, and those are fuel deposits? Or perhaps a leaky valve seal? Another modern "improvement" that crab cap. I had GM cars with both the old points ignition (1972 Chevy Impala 350) and the later HEI system (1975 Olds Delta 350) and neither one had problems with the standard Delco...

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

My OMC engine has the same style exhaust, it is Barr aftermarket. I used their gaskets coated with Permatex Aviation sealer and had no leaks at all. Still good 5 seasons later.

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

Volvo Penta had a lot of trouble with the gaskets on these and they were revised a couple of times. Do you know if whoever installed them used the latest style gaskets and followed VP's instructions?

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

I think carbon would be black there’s a lot of red in that build up on the plug. The crab cap makes the plug identification confusing. That build up looks like that water has been there for a while. When I had my blown HGs it wasn’t that much at all. Just a little rust & an orange cast to the...

VP 5.0 GXi-G spark plug corrosion

It all depends on where the water settles in the exhaust manifold. You can have a small leak between the manifold and the elbow and depending on the angle of the boat it may run to the same cyl. Other causes are water leaking into the carb or throttle body, or a leaky cyl head gasket. I would...

If you're towing with a Jeep or Dodge/Ram with the Chrysler 545RFE and it won't go into gear....try this first......

It’s even less than that! 3/4 mile to the ramp 3/4 mile to the boatyard for bottom paint. Longest tow was about 15 miles to the best fiberglass shop on LI to get it painted in red Imron. Drum brakes is all I’ve used. On those very short toes the hills are real steep, no problems stopping it at...

If you're towing with a Jeep or Dodge/Ram with the Chrysler 545RFE and it won't go into gear....try this first......

One reason why I prefer hydraulic surge brakes to electric including electric over hydraulic: the easy of troubleshooting and finding problems before setting out.... On some actuators you can pump the master cyl with a long screwdriver, then you can feel if it is solid, or soft, that will tell...

    Trailer surge brakes

If you're going to replace the wheel cylinders, make sure first that the adjusters aren't frozen up. If they are, you will be better off with a pair of new backing plates all ready to go, although you can buy new adjusters separately. I will just extend the threads of a new adjuster and coat it...
