    Shift rod length

    The model # suggests your motor is or was a short shaft.----Is there a 5" spacer between lower unit and exhaust housing ?------You will need a short driveshaft.----Short shift rod would be 5" shorter than the long shift rod.

    Model # of this motor ?---I assume a 2 stroke.-------Have you checked the gear oil ?------I know for a fact that these gearcases ( 2 stroke ) are not robust.------See if there are any metal bits on the drain plug magnet !!

    One good battery will do.----Use booster cable directly to the starter to eliminate the cables / solenoid as the culprit.-----Find the issue with the system.----Take starter apart.----Very easy.----Then do an ohm test on armature.------Perhaps replace brushes.----Inspect cables.----Not sure why...

    Nope--Not the power ports.--Those holes ( circled in red ) must have a nylon insert with a specific hole size.----They are called " bleed inserts " by Mercury.-----I often find 3 of 5 missing.-----I install 8-32 stainless setscrews with correct hole size in them.----Never to go missing again.

    Agreed----Impeller is at least 7 years old and likely not replaced by previous owner.--So could be 15 years old.----Put a new one in every 5 years.

    The flywheel taper and crankshaft tapers must be lapped together for a precise fit.---Use valve grinding compound.------The key locates the flywheel for correct timing.----The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers.----And 50 ft-lbs is correct for the flywheel on a 76 model 25 HP.----Tapers...

    Help! 1973 johnson 65 outboard

    Remove white wire from safety switch.----Touch that wire to ground.-----Have your assistant try and crank the motor with white wire grounded.
