I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Got the test areas stripped this evening before the rains came. Temp was about 82 degrees with 55% humidity. The aircraft stripper really worked well on the fresh primer. Console cleaned.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

The plan right now is to strip off the test bed primer from the hull and console, taking everything right back down to zero. That way I don't have to fuss with trying to mask off the test area when we do the prep cleaning for the entire hull. Once it's cleaned, I'll prime with the SE and...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

So I went with Rusto. Picked up more SE plus some regular primer this afternoon. Got some 2000 grit wet/dry paper too.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Checked the paint just before 7:00 and it looks pretty good. :) So no fingernail test needed?

Hahaha! Fer sure! I just sent the boy out to grab a couple pix of our test paint. Looking good so far. Uniform and dry. I think I'll leave it alone for 24 hours before the fingernail test.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

We closed up the garage doors and windows, then painted. Gonna leave it that way for awhile. Keeping my fingers crossed here. Console lower section only was painted.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I'm thinking that maybe I didn't correctly prep the surface which is why I'm trying the current sequence. We're doing pretty well, except when the boy said "Oh! That's really clean!" and then ran his fingers across the cleaned area. Ya buys 'em books, send 'em to school and what do...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

First pass. I'd let the boy apply the stripper. I donned some gloves to scrape. Immediately upon starting I got a snoot full of vapors, stopped and put on my respirator too. Big dummy. Rolling now though. Am planning on this cleaning sequence. Stripper. Mineral spirits. Acetone...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Back on the job! I checked the primer this morning and it was definitely tougher than before but I'm still not satisfied. So we're stripping it all off.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I've been watching fishing and boating shows this morning. Nice. And the other guy is watching the same thing. Cool. Windows! Unlike the closet where I was before.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

And my efforts yesterday failed too. I think the humidity was just too high at 88% or so. And I may have applied the primer too thick in some places. We're supposed to have perfect painting weather over the next few days so I'll keep trying. This coming Saturday will be 6 weeks...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Rainy weather here today, not ideal for painting but we did a little more testing. I sanded the console with 400 grit on my palm sander which helped but not enough. So I had the boy strip it all off. While he was doing that I decided to try something different and we stopped using the console...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Well, I figured it out. It was operator error! And still is! I was spraying too far away and moving the can back and forth too quickly. I have absolutely no idea why. :noidea: I do know better. But as a result of my error, the paint was partially drying in midair. This...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Back on the job after finishing lunch. No more dehydration and crashing blood sugar for this guy! Definitely do NOT want to do that again! Watermann - did you use the same method for the second color?

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Yeah, I was thinking that just one coat of SE primer would be required. Until I read the can. That's why I went with three coats. I was spraying about a foot from the metal. SE directions. These are the directions on the Filler Primer.
