    This kind of problem resulted from-( 1 ) too much torque on the nut---(2 ) trying to start a stubborn motor with impact gun or electric drill.-----Instead of trouble shooting , some folks just start using the wrong methods on a precision / fine motor !!!

    set it at 21-15/16"----There are no tricks needed for the simple job of putting the pin in.----Did you take note of the direction of offset at the top of the rod ?----Do you know the procedure for setting the shift rod height ?

    The flexplate should not be taken off.----Flywheel is removed as 1 unit.------Use the factory style puller ( I made one years ago.) ----Or use a puller and 2 threaded holes bolts of the 8 to do this simple job.

    It ( item #21) holds the choke during the starting process.----Makes sure that the flapper is closed completely and stays closed !----In my opinion this should be an easy fix to get this motor running.----But you never know what the 3 previous owners did to this motor !

    Be hard for both crankcases to fail at the same time.------Is the choke detent in good shape and working properly , yes or no ?----It is item #21 in the parts diagram.

    You put in 6-1/2 drops ( bit of humour ) to quickly determine where the issue is with a motor.----If motor fires it proves spark at the right time and compression.-----So the issue on this motor is fuel delivery.-----Maybe the high speed jet in the carburetor bowl is plugged.----Or maybe the NLA...

    When you pull the choke on does the choke plate close fully ?----And does it stay closed after you try and start the motor, yes or no or no idea what to look for ?

    Electronic devices are cheap to make in an automated factory.------Electronic devices are quick and cheap to install on an assembly line.----Are calibrated at the source.----Require few skill at the assembly line.-----But when it comes to diagnoses and repairs this new technology is very expensive.

    I do not know your mechanic.----I can not see , feel or hear your motor.----You need to provide exact information , answers to questions.----Perhaps find a good shop at $100 + / hr if you can find one to work on a 37 year old motor.----Good luck with it.
