    Mercruiser 5.7 won’t make power

If you end up with nothing else to try I would set total advance at 30 and see what that does. I tink the delco kit states 8 intial 25 total for a 350 but I think merc for a vortec is 10 initial and 30 or so total .

    Mercruiser 5.7 won’t make power

That is on the low side. Might be taking Danforth's advice and see if you have a flat cam lobe by checking lift at the rockers. Also would look for intake and carb gasket leaks. If you had a intake leak I would think your plugs would be way lean and you would have top adjust your idle mix screws...

Shifter is turning the upper shift shaft when put in forward or reverse.

Might have bent the swivel shaft would disconnect the lower shift cable at the shift plate see if it moves feely both with the swivel shaft connected and disconnected. That should narrow down where the hang up is. There are an upper and lower set of bushings in the bellhousing and a upper...

    Mercruiser model 1A/1B/1C Trim pump

I would say good luck on this . My grandfather had a '66 Penn Yan with same drive but the 150 hp 6 cylinder, Quite frankly the tilt never worked since it was new, always had issues. I cut my boat maintenance teeth on that boat with him This is pushing my memory back but originally his had a...

    Eliminate thunderbolt system ?

Agreed I like carbs myself but appreciate the electronic ignition. But as Chris lays out it is relatively easy to diagnose when understood So yo have an issue when you accelerate? As Chris mentioned lay out what the issue is and what you are working on may not be ignition related. .

    Eliminate thunderbolt system ?

Of course find a points distributor that is marine rated and fits your engine. Toss TB distributor and module take 12 v wire off positive terminal of coil put appropriate resistance in to feed coil during run You will need to pick up 12 v off the starter slave solenoid or starter to supply full...

    Surging / losing rpm

I think you need to put a 0 in front of your serial number here is a parts break down fir it https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury_marine_parts/sn/M001615 i would suspect this is electrical loose or dirty connection. Do you loose your dash power when this happens ? thoughts are look at...

    Mercruiser 5.7 won’t make power

I would think rpm should drop, but you should also see the timing be fixed on the timing light. Otherwise i think it would be moving around some. you do see a fair number of posts on having trouble getting into base mode, which is why i suggested just set the total advance at 30-32 at 3 k or so...

    Mercruiser 5.7 won’t make power

Id start with the timing verify it is going into base mode set the initial timing, take it out of base make sure you are getting 30-32 at 3 k rpm or so. Based on comments here I think you didn't have it in base mode and likely are missing some advance. If you cant get it in base mode rev it to...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

You have to set it by pumping the throttle otherwise it stay in the open position Also no fuel comes out the accelerator pump nozzles unless you pump the throttle. This just over comes the momentary loss of vacuum across boosters when throttle is opening by squirting gas in. if you can get it...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

If on starting fluid you don't get it to cough I'd say you don't have spark or timing is off or no compression If you have decent spark you can keep it running by dribbling gas down the carb. Just gotta be careful in case of a back fire.....
