Taking boat into salt / brackish water

Just saw this interesting thread. I would not worry much at all about the effects of salt water given the use you describe. However coastal boating with tides, rocks & sandbars requires knowledge & caution. I still like paper charts because when you zoom in on a plotter or GPS, guess what...

Having trouble finding points to elec conversion kit. 91 3.0 mercruiser.

Points are not a bad system as long as you know how to use a dwell meter & feeler gauges. Auto shop 101.

    One manifold hot (5.0)

If you want decent quality made in USA aftermarket exhaust use Barr Marine. I used them on mine and they fit perfect with no leaks. The paint doesn't hold up great on my salt water mooring so I painted them with Rustoleum. I orginally had the OMC one piece V6 exhaust manifolds like Merc used...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

Well it could have been in the salt but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I have a lot of experience with salt water use & what I’ve found is that you can get a good 15-20 years of use from the engine before troubles start but the exhaust system needs replacing (at least the elbows) every 5-7...

    One manifold hot (5.0)

The problem with cleaning out rust from the passages is that the rust….USED TO BE CAST IRON…. I look at manifolds & elbows as consumable items due to salt water use….

    5.7 omc stalling while shifting

Ok here is a Prestolite points distributor. To adjust you need a set of feeler gauges and a dwell meter. Put it on the dwell meter with the engine running (+ terminal goes to - on coil, - terminal goes to ground) and see if it matches the spec for you engine. If it does, then that's not the...

Agreed those don’t have a lot of flaking rust you could use a belt sander to clean them up (carefully) no rotary tools though…

Oil in gas/water in cylinders 94 Volvo Penta 4.3

You take apart the manifold and elbow, and check the sealing surfaces for flatness after sanding them smooth with a sanding block. Use a straight edge and feeler gauges, there should be no more than .002" variation across them and no pits in the sealing surface. If there are pits the gasket...

Oil in gas/water in cylinders 94 Volvo Penta 4.3

got my cyl heads from a local machine shop, $275 each. Fel Pro marine gasket set ARP cyl head bolts for small block Chevrolet the old ones will be real rusty from raw water cooling, I could not get the bolts out even with a long 1/2" drive ratchet, so used my 1/2" De Walt electric impact gun the...

better check first to see if that old system is leaking water back into the center exhaust passage....or else....can hydro lock again! BTW, my engine ran find with cracked heads after a bad overheat, for almost 3 seasons, then the Hgs blew at the end of the season, had water in one cyl (not...

OMC King Cobra conversion to merc

I wish I knew the screen name of the guy on here Rick who did something very similar himself, and it tuned out great. Might search around and see if I can find his posts. I think it will all fit fine, it may be necessary to drill a couple extra holes for the B-III but the cut out for sure is the...

    5.7 omc no thermostat

As long as the engine didn't overheat, and bits of the old one didn't get into the circulating pump should be OK. You have to use a proper Marine stat, 160* for the OMC and its held in with that rubber ring. An automotive stat will let the engine get way to hot and will rust out in no time...

    Mercruiser 5.7 2001 - choo-choo sound - what could it be?

Yep could be a loose spark plug, or perhaps a failed exhaust manifold gasket, as well. I hope you can remove that "well" that the engine sits in so the poor mechanic doesn't have to contort himself to get at it .

89 4.3 OMC cobra stalling at WOT

Probably not but make sure that someone didn't put a 195* thermostat in there. The stat on these are held in with a rubber ring that can get obscured with rust, you have to dig it out with a pick. A good test on temps is to get an IR Temp gun. Then take a reading of the intake manifold right...
