    Lower unit oil -- water or not?

    Air bubbles.-----Let motor sit for a week before checking oil in lower unit.----Check or have shaft checked for run out.----Destroying a stainless prop usually results in a bent propshaft.----A shop would use a dial indicator and not eyeball it.

    Electric shift failure is usually a broken clutch spring , broken wire or loss of 12 volts on a wire.----Easy to inspect

    The spark stops when ignition is grounded out.----Circuit is OPEN for motor to run.-----Note---12 volts from the battery is NOT used to generate spark at the plugs.----That function is done by the spinning flywheel magneto.

    Those 4 cylinder units 120 / 140 HP are very robust.----Used for many years by Mercury / Volvo / OMC.------A good used one would not be hard to find.

    You need to understand that this is a simple job!-----Your motor does not have a warning horn.---It does not have a shut down feature on overheat.----It would run for you till the motor is scrap.----If you do not know how old the impeller is your motor needs a new one !--And the spline on...

    Checked reed valves ?----Any pieces broken on the throttle cam?----Throttle plate going full open ?

    What is " everything " on this motor.----Help yourself and post exact details.----Did you run it with 50:1 gas oil mix, yes or no ?

    The timing on these motors rarely goes out of adjustment.---Well a sheared flywheel key throws timing out.----And no you can not find a sheared key condition with a timing light.---Well , at least not on most motors.

    Set idle RPM with boat in the lake.----Warmed up and in gear.---Testing in a bucket with no prop is a waste of time.

    Water Separator , larger filter verses smaller filter

    If boat is left in the water use a large filter.----If it lives in the driveway a smaller filter will do.

    My guess is that you have never seen a cylinder wall of a " new condition " motor.----Your motor needs to come apart.----Needs to be bored and oversize pistons fitted.---Returned to new factory fit and finish.-----I doubt you can find these parts today.----Find good used parts on E-bay...

    Sometimes it is hard for folks to accept the truth from people who have worked on many of these motors since 1968.----Have all kinds of parts for those motors.----Boxes full of good parts.
