    Bad starter?

Spray pinion with penetrating oil and work by hand to loosen it up. I put a shot a lithium grease on mine as PM

Mercury smartcraft sc1000 sea water temp issue

Paddle wheels and temp sensor (thermistors) are notoriously flaky components. Don’t use transducers with temp or paddle functions built in for just that reason. Use a NMEA 2000 paddle/temp combo unit sensor for ease of replacement.

A few questions from a learner

Yes, that it it. Loose or bad wiring would cause the gauge to read empty when faulted. Jumping between full, 1/4 and 3/4 is normal behavior for a “cork on a stick” type sender. Change over to a “reed” type sender to resolve the issue

    I hate winter

Not looking at the right spot… Stripers will stick around until the water is mid to uppers 40’s as long as the bait is around. Find the bait you find the Stripers. Power generation plants? Draws them in big time during the winter. Look for deep holes where bait congregates during winter...

Wobbly Chairs - Garelick Commander 15"

Very common seat configuration. I’ve had Garelick Sliding/swivel seats on my last two boats. Looks to me to be a Frankenseat. Have never seen a mount that didn’t use a spider mount to attach seat to pedestal. Looks more like a table mount. Never seen a mount without large knob(s) to adjust...

2005 yamaha 250 hpdi Stator or Rectifier

With only 12 volts at idle you have a charging and or battery issue. How old is the battery? What is fully charged, rested voltage? Having said that, don’t expect a starting battery to keep up with a full compliment of electronics. I run a 1kW depth finder, chartplotter, radar, VHF and...

    Need Electrical help

White in "Neutral" Black is "Positive" The copper wire is Earth (ground) Hard to believe in this day and age a light fixture wouldn't have dedicated earth connection. If worst comes to worst you attach Earth to the box if it's metal. Don't use the wire otherwise

What do i need to get my engine data on my Garmin Echomap?

The EchoMap is NMEA 2000 compatible. Your motor is not.... You need to purchase and install a Gateway from Mercruiser / Mercury similar to this to get NMEA 2000 data https://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercury-mercruiser-8m0165589-gateway-can Don't know if this the exact one that you need, but you...

Installing 12 Fuse Block Blue Sea # 5026

The fact that three circuits when out at the same time is suspicious. I had something similar situation a couple of years back. Turned out to be a bad bilge pump that had shorted to ground. Power was back feeding through ground to other circuits, bypassing the other switch's "hot" disconnects...

Surge brakes lasted 1200 miles of highway, whats wrong

What brand brakes? Using ceramic pads? When is the last time you serviced the sliders and or rebuilt the calipers? What make and model coupler that requires a come along to actuate? My coupler can be actuated enough to stop the wheel from spinning by hand.

2001 mercury optimax 135 running hot

Too low... should be upward of 2-3 psi if I remember correctly. What is the water pressure at higher RPM? What water pressure do you get running city water (~60 psi) on muffs through the system w/o the engine running? Remove poppet and plug hole while running the same test as above.

    Inboard replacing

How big is the medium hole? If your breaking loose the hole is too big When I played with vents a few years back I ended up going up a pitch size and was working with a single 1/4" or 5/16" (6 mm or 8 mm) vent.

What happened that both the power head and lower unit had to be replaced under warranty?

2001 mercury optimax 135 running hot

Quick Google search shows this to be a common problem. What is your water pressure at idle? Did you change the spring on the poppet valve as well? Did you replace the entire water pump or just the impeller? Did you replace the grommet(s) on the bottom of the water tube when you did the work...

Questions for shallow water outboard jet operators

Grew up on the Potomac River upstream of the fall line. Fish the Susquehanna above the fall line as well a couple of times a year. Both are very shallow and littered with rock and debris. It’s not if, it’s when you hit something or run aground. Jon boats are king and it doesn’t matter if your...

    Aggravating gasket

The “not fitting” part is swelling. Going to happen over time. If it’s an older motor could still be using Buna N instead of Viton (fluorocarbon) rubber which is a much better performer with E fuels.

    Aggravating gasket

Hard to tell from the picture of its a rubber or fiber gasket.. either way, you do not reuse compression fit gaskets, period. In either scenario, the gasket is “crushed” between the mating surfaces to make a seal. The cross section of the gasket and the amount of crush (percentage of...
