Should you buy 20 year old boat to fix up or 10 year old boat?

The short answer is no….as long as it was designed for offshore use, maintenance has been kept up and was quality construction to begin with. Lots and lots of hulls out there I wouldn’t take out of the inlet if you paid me. My boat was 3 yro when I bought it. It will be 25 yro in May. Two...

Should you buy 20 year old boat to fix up or 10 year old boat?

By the time a boat hits 10 years of age, everything rubber or plastic needs to be replaced from atmospheric degradation, ie UV and ozone. That includes fuel and vacuum lines, scupper hoses, plastic thru hulls, plastic pump housings, etc.

Nauticus Smart tabs vs Bennett Self Leveling Trim Tabs?

You didn’t mention what size motor…. The boat is rated to 225 Hp. Shouldn’t have “performance” issues with 225 hp on a 1,600 aluminum boat…. Under powered, wrong prop or operator. None of which tabs will correct. No way I would would installed “fixed” tabs on a boat used in tidal water

    Battery storage in parallel?

A "warm basement" is not the place to store (higher discharge rate) or charge (hydrogen sulfide) batteries. Unless you live in an area that regularly drops below in 0 degrees F (-18 C), your batteries would be better off stored in the garage to slow the rate of discharge and prevent the...

https://www.api.org/~/media/files/certification/engine-oil-diesel/publications/mom_guide_english_2013.pdf Interesting that a 2003 manual would specify obsolete oils with a precautionary warning. SG Obsolete CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most gasoline-powered automotive...

Some screwed up. Truck tire by chance? My comment was related to “digital meters” after tires on vehicle as overkill

    Tire Pressure

Pretty useless endeavor unless the gauge has recently been certified (accuracy) and is temperature compensated.

    Who has installed Helicoils ?

Two things that mess with the installation….walking the tap drill (out of round) and not starting the tap perfectly perpendicular to the hole. I prefer to sit things up in a milling machine and dial in the part but a good quality drill press will suffice. Drill, tap and install the insert in...

You lost me with all this talk of wooden dowels, finger tight, etc…. You can’t half butt the install of a helicoil in a high torque applications. I would highly recommend having the insert installed professionally using the appropriate, drill size, tap and insert To answer your...

    Polarity issue?

Yes…,, Put a voltmeter on your battery and record voltage. Leave voltmeter connected to battery and watch it while trying to tilt the motor.

    Polarity issue?

What is your battery voltage.. preferably measured with a volt meter? Starting batteries are very sensitive to deep discharge. Running one until dead twice in a season is typically a death sentence. Reversing the wires on the bilge pump makes pump run backwards.
