Counter Rotating vs Non-Counter Rotating Twins

The hull has a few quirks that would be exaggerated by dumping the CR. You would not like the result

97 150 hp carb battery cables

Using a wire larger than nesscary to carry a given load is a waste of money.

97 150 hp carb battery cables

Replaced both motor and house cables this Spring. The Evinrude/Johnson OE cable for my 200 Ocean Pro is 6 gauge.

    2005 175HP VINDICATOR

Now that BRP (Evinrude/Johnson) is out of business either is a viable option IMHO. Tried of burning thru $90 worth of oil with each tank of gas. Upcoming re-power, if I don’t just sell the boat flat out and replace, is either a Yamaha or Suzuki 4 stroke

Counter Rotating vs Non-Counter Rotating Twins

Depends on the hull and past experience. Counters zero out prop torque. Stops the roll, reduces steering effort and makes it easy to move bow left and right. Makes a big difference in a hull with a lot of deadrise. One of those things “if you didn’t know any better”. Not a compromise I would make.

    Best Phone App for Charts

Cell phones don't have a battery power to support "active" GPS like a chart plotter making for much slower and less precise position updates. Would be interesting to know what your EPE is when using your phone for navigation?

    Best Phone App for Charts

Most tablets and cells phones triangulate position off the cell towers. How does the app updated your position w/o cell coverage?

    House battery?

If a “marine mechanic” can’t figure it out in person how are we to figure it out on the internet? FWIW: Batteries typically get wired into the battery switch. Better question…. What happened to the cable and why was it removed?

    Painting Aluminum

Do yourself a favor and bypass the etching. Too much to loose with little to no gain in protection. Sand then wash with soap and water to remove any residue. Any 2 part polyurethane epoxy worth its weight uses a formulated (wash) primer as under coat. Use the product specified by your paint...

    Painting Aluminum

If your going to etch you need to know exactly what aluminum alloy your boat is made of. Most aluminum etches are not friendly to aluminum alloyed with copper, ie 5052

    Overweight motor

A neighbor repowered his 115 HP Merc with a Yammy F150. Was having all kinds of issues which didn't make sense from his description. Asked me to tag a long the next day. Could see the problem from two docks away.....25" shaft on a 20" transom. Looked silly to me, he didn't think anything about it

    Fuel Problem

Had issues similar to those described. Found the problem spraying starting fluid around the base of the carbs. Turned out to be hair line cracks in several carb bodies.

    What are these black spots?

Properly maintained, welded aluminum (heavy) boats are one thing. Riveted is an entirely different beast. Keep an eye on the rivets… that’s where it is where the corrosion will manifest Evaporating saltwater leaves the corrosive “salts” behind. Decking over the bottom is not a good idea...

    What are these black spots?

Well…hate to be the bearer of bad news but aluminum doesn’t hold up well to saltwater. Dissimilar metals corrosion, stagnant (trapped) water (no O2 to replenish Al oxide) resulting drop in PH and crevice corrosion (at the rivits) will be your demise. Anodize and paint helps for a while but...

    What are these black spots?

Is the staining just on the surface of the aluminum or mixed in with the paint? Black staining on aluminum is typically induced by low PH condition. If the coloration has leached into the paint you need to remove the surrounding paint as well. If it's restricted to the base metal, I would try...
