Converting 5.0 mpi to closed cooling

Hi Lou. There would be literally all the O2 in the world available to the engine...even with the drain plugs back in. Of course. It’s wide open to the atmosphere when the boat is out the water in storage and left not filled with AF. No doubt about it.

    Best prop fuel economy

No probs. Hate to be a mr negative. Apologies for that. Just had far too many ruined days caused by no less than 3 of these engines. Great when they are running well though.

    Mercruiser 350 mag MIE ECM

Doubt it. Much much more likely it’s the famous Diz cap mpi issue. Heard so many times now that the cap “looked ok”...Just buy another one and see what happens. Good chance you’ll be smiling afterwards

Converting 5.0 mpi to closed cooling

Your manifolds will last longer if you flush them out and fill with AF each winter. Strongly believe the damage is done to manifolds on salt boats...mostly when they are in storage and lying damp and empty. Your block will last longer than you will..if you leave it full of AF during storage

    No Start, but should

Couple of things. your gauge is off a fair bit You could be out on the timing by half (as in you’ve set it on the off rotation) Or your fuel is rubbish. Suspect the rotation of the engine is out though. Your on the wrong cycle

2005 Mariner 60 hp 2 stroke bigfoot knocking noise

I’d do a compression test on it first. Just to rule out anything serious with the engine itself. Is there oil in the injection tank ? What did you mix the oil in fuel at ratio ? Check the gear oil ASAP too. See if it makes the same noise in gear at idle too. Pull the plugs and turn it over on...

Propeller slipping for a while and then worked fine

Sounds like your hub has some it’s job and perished partly. Impeller is on its way out too.
  8. Q

    Best prop fuel economy

I presume you have the prop numbers back to front and it’s a 17” pitch and not a 14.5” maybe ? I think you need to get more pitch on that ASAP. Don’t use it again at those rpm I’d suggest. That engine is weak enough without stressing it even more. Go easy on that engine I’d suggest and check...

    2003 Mercury 40 hp 2 stroke

I’d say forget everything you’ve been told or what’s been said. Test it out for yourself, as she is just now, first. Take it from there. Otherwise, your as good as throwing money away on a prop. Hope that helps.

    What Pitch To Buy

Totally get that Scott. I should have mentioned about the Rev 4. That’s the exception to my personal rule...haha. It’s a hell of a prop that. But is just a tempest plus with an extra blade. If you’ve a normal boat that does well with a Rev 4...generally it will be even better mid and top end...

    What Pitch To Buy

Depending on the boat, I’m a great believer that most occasions these days, there is not much of an excuse for a 4 blade prop. None that can outweigh the Benefits of the great range of 3 blades available these days from the likes of merc. Unless you have a big heavy centre console thing at...

    Open Bow Boat Sleeping ideas

You can get an inflatable thing that kind of extends the rear seat into a bed arrangement. Have a look on eBay.

Upgrading from 2 stroke to 4 stroke

The thing about a new 90hp merc is that it’s the same engine as the mighty 115hp merc. In that power, it’s a very light engine for its huge displacement of 2100cc and actually puts out a good deal more power than its 115 badge suggests. It’s lighter than a 125 optimax 2 stroke and more powerful...

Opinions on shop's quoted Bravo 3 maintenance cost

We are metric here in the U.K. hardly ever used the 18mm, must admit.
  15. Q

    Bravo 3 prop recommendation?

No. Leave them as they are, in terms of pitch. Sounds well set up to me. Once they are perfect, you may gain a little rpm and speed too, should you see more lift. Remember a little bit of chop and air under that hull would easily see an extra few rpm and speed too. Flat calm conditions always...

    2008 blue water edge v8 8.1L 425hp reliable boat?

Have a wee look into who actually makes all these engines, that Volvo and Mercruiser have used for the last 40 years or so, until fairly recently. The 3.0, 4.3, 5,0, 5.7, 6.2 7.4, 8.1 and 8.2 etc etc. All GM engines. Maybe hold your smart opinion, next time it wants to get the better of you...

    2008 blue water edge v8 8.1L 425hp reliable boat?

Really ? What is it then ? Id be amazed if that 8.1 wasn’t a GM engine. What makes you think NA Are you being serious ? Or you joking around ?

Mercruiser 5.0 MPI 2013. Crank but no start.

C’mon. What was it really ? Haha.

    2008 blue water edge v8 8.1L 425hp reliable boat?

Really ? What is it then ? Id be amazed if that 8.1 wasn’t a GM engine. Surely it’s like all the other VP 8.1 that age...and a 496ci GM. What makes you think it isn’t

    Mercury 2004 90hp 2 stroke compression

I bought a boat for pennies about 4 years ago. Sold as parts or repair, with a 1998 mercury 90 2 stroke (same engine) It was deemed as this by the owner after his mechanic told him all compression had gone. I bought it for half the worth of the trailer and parts of the engine, so worth a gamble...
