Was running now will not turn over DISTRIBUTOR, TIMING, #1 on CAP & PLUG WIRE LOCATIONS

And then: Check the carburetor, starter and alternator to make sure they are all marine certified. Even fuses used in an inboard gas engine compartment are different, they should be ATC fuses instead of ATO.

Was running now will not turn over DISTRIBUTOR, TIMING, #1 on CAP & PLUG WIRE LOCATIONS

Yep as soon as I read “advance” and “window” I knew what was going on there, had one of those in our 1972 Chevy Impala! You need a real marine mechanic to go over this boat and remove any & all hazards left behind by previous owners out of ignorance or cheapness before it’s safe to use!

Downsides of buying an IO Saltwater boat in the north east?

A lot depends on the power package. Outboards don't need near as much maintenance as I/Os in salt water. Also, if the boat was used in salt water but not moored or slipped in salt water, that is a difference as well. The worst example would be a slipped or moored in salt water raw water cooled...

Boat fell off lift and smashed some rocks.. What are your thoughts on this damage ?

Might want to pull the starter, it may have been under water, fresh water you might be able to dry it out. Salt water it would be totally trashed.

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Here is a pic of the OMC/Volvo thermostat housing (yes they used the same exact part, same thermostat too depending on the year). The stat housing works like a gate valve. When the engine is cold, the cold water enters the stat housing and flows out the exhaust. The water in the engine just...

Boat fell off lift and smashed some rocks.. What are your thoughts on this damage ?

Do you have insurance? If so I'd contact them first, the damage looks like it needs to be repaired by a pro, but the water intrusion is quite serious as well. That is one reason why I put up with bottom paint and the other hassles of salt water boating, we keep our boats on rotating moorings...

1998 VP Cobra SX Gimbal Selection

go with an OEM kit it is not that much more and fits better and lasts longer. You do NOT want that to leak again prematurely. I have found that on the Cobras the OEM bellows lasts about 10 years.

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

The other thing that can cause overheating at higher speeds is leaking head gaskets. It explains how to check for this in the document (basically you just replace the manifold feed hoses with clear hose & run it on plane then check for bubbles in the cooling water flow in those hoses) . I had...

Water in bilge has returned in 1995 Four Winns 190 Horizon

It’s possible something went wrong with the bellows install, I’d test it but pull the drive & look. It’s not a hard job but there are things you need to make sure are right.

Water in bilge has returned in 1995 Four Winns 190 Horizon

On my 88 Horizon 200 the OE transducer is glued to the inside of the hull but is not a thru hull unit; these shoot the signal thru the fiberglass. So unless they did something different on the later ones I don’t think that’s the problem. That never worked on mine I installed a transom mount...

Water in bilge has returned in 1995 Four Winns 190 Horizon

I would to further investigate: Start with a totally dry bilge, put your cell phone on a selfie stick and have someone slowly back the boat into the water and watch & listen. One problem and it is a significant one, is that I/Os by nature of their design have a lot of places to leak water at the...

What is normal temperature 3L Volvo Penta?

It should be a 160 stat. I never had a 3.0 but I have a 4.3 V6 Cobra with the same thermostat housing and exhaust design as the Volvo and it ranges from 160-175. If it is really hitting 180 that is a little too hot. Try taking IR temp gun readings on the stat housing or right where it bolts to...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

I think when you have a 160 stat you should see this at idle. Pic was taken in the water after cooling down after coming off plane. Maybe a bit higher but based on my experience (only difference is I have a 4.3 with the Cobra drive mounted impeller, but exact same thermostat housing & exhaust...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

In the drive there are 2 water tube grommets that seal the water transfer tube that sends water up from the lower unit to the upper unit. These can deteriorate over time and cause lowered raw water volume as can that plastic fitting in the pivot housing which can crack. However these factors...

Water in bilge has returned in 1995 Four Winns 190 Horizon

That model has the raw water pump on the engine not in the drive. You should pull the drive to check the drive shaft bellows for water.
