2 Fuel Water filters ,2 totally different fuel contents,Fuel pros ,have a look at this

Charlie is in Long Island as I am and we only have 2 gas stations that sell E0 fuel so it’s quite likely that is E10 but I’ve never seen E10 fuel that looked like that. Looks like too much Stabil. My gas has always been a uniform yellow color with no different layers etc. What is the fuel tank...

    Why is my carb oxidizing????

Be careful with second hand carbs, the carb has to be a marine unit (J vents and the overflow nipple are not on automotive carbs) and used carbs can be in any condition, may never work right etc. I know it's an old boat but just be careful of what you buy. If I could not make my Quadrajet work...

    Water in oil

The Barr after market OMC/Volvo style ones I put on almost 5 years ago have held up quite well. At the end of this season I will probably remove the elbows to check them out.

vista 268 - Loose or broken Wires near propeller?

Boat looks good, and glad you got those things taken care of. Are you going to paint the outdrive with anti fouling paint? That's pretty much necessary every year here. 100% salt water use. One day I'll have to strip it all off, not looking forward to that lol.

    5.7 omc carb leak

I'm not really sure what you're asking here, you can replace a fuel line without it having anything to do with the cooling system, but do not overtighten the mounting bolts for the Quadrajet, or else you will warp the air horn (top cover of the carb) and it won't seal. Unless you have to...

    5.7 omc carb leak

You might have 2 problems there you have intermittent connections in the 9 pin cannon connector and your carb needle valve may be leaking or the float has absorbed fuel and is causing the engine to flood. In any case take the connector apart clean the terminals and put it back together use a...

    Water in oil

responded to the other thread. those have been trash for a long time. Here's what they should look like (OMC/Volvo exhaust)

    Water in oil

Water in the cyls eventually will get into the motor oil and crankcase. I had 2 blown HGs letting water in to the cyls (#2 and just a little in #1) no leaks from anything else and I had the same water in the oil under the valve covers as you did. You won't see it on the dipstick right away but...

    Water in oil

Those shoulda been tossed FOR SURE. But water in the engine can have more than one source. Did you have water in the cyls, rusty spark plug electrodes? Likely from what I see there. If those sealed it would have been a miracle. What the sealing surfaces look when new for the OMC/Volvo style...

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

I took my old pump apart, there is no filter inside of these. It is exactly like the same old diaphragm pump used by Chevrolet on those engines since the '50s, just with the extra fitting to prevent fuel from leaking from a bad diaphragm into the bilge. However, it looks like Merc did use a...

    Overheat

Check for water in the cyls and in the motor oil; signs of a blown head gasket

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

I don't think you're right about that, I have a pic here to show you what a 4.3 marine mechanical pump looks like, just like the V8 pump but mounted upside down. Old one is OE Carter, new is Sierra aftermarket, I also have a new Carter one, looks exactly the same. So no integral filter on these...

    E15 Gas experience

The bigger issue is the is something that is inherent to using a gas/alcohol mix: inaccurate mix by tanker truck drivers when the E-10 change over started here in 2004 or so, samples were tested and many had more than 10%. That combined with the cleansing effect of ethanol caused big problems in...

    Water in oil

this was discussed on the other thread, the intake gaskets are suspect, that will put water right into the cam valley & motor oil.

    Cooling system question

You might want to back flush it from the impeller hose at the housing, back ward to the outdrive. Those drives have a clean out that can be removed so you can do that and any crud in the PS cooler could be flushed out that way. The other thing that can cause that (low raw water volume) is rotted...

    I/O to outboard conversion

Cost, late model outboard are expensive, unknowns, will the boat have correct balance, it is a lot of work for unknown outcomes. That boat would be well powered with a 4.3 V6-4bbl if you want to get away from the 470 engine but you have to change the front engine mounts, but might be less work...

    Water in oil

If you pull the spark plugs and crank it over would see if water got in via the cyls or not. Always good to do diagnosis before dis-assembly. Merc had a service bulletin explaining how to check for the causes of water in the oil and/or cyls. On mine it was blown head gaskets from an overheat 3...

    2.3 timing belt

You can use the Merc/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. Just make sure to refill it the correct way, most of them take about 2 qts of gear oil.
