And now we can watch you tube on our IPad while doing carb rebuilds! Couldn’t do that back in the 70s!

got a question about a future V6 to V8 repower...

Given what’s happening in the world right now I might just stick with the economical V6-Quadrajet. Imagine what gas on the water will cost this summer. I could see it hitting 6/7 bucks a gallon at this rate…

got a question about a future V6 to V8 repower...

That’s one more issue with a project like this. Mebbe when the time comes I just buy a reman V6 short block & put my heads that I installed on the old block in 2017 on that…

    Carb choice.

That’s true younger folks seem to think carbs are akin to witchcraft lol. It’s really simple actually Bernoullis law & pressure difference. Whether it’s a simple 1bbl on a lawnmower or three deuces on a big block V8. Old boats I’ll take carbs ANY DAY over EFI. Cost & parts availability. When I...

    Volvo Penta Steering Stiff

Well if the cable isn’t stiff and there’s no play in the helm or steering arm it could be the internal seals in the actuator. These can be rebuilt even though VP says they can’t. They can be tough to change. I had to replace mine on my 1988 OMC which was leaking for a while. If you have to...

    Volvo Penta Steering Stiff

How about in the hinge pins/steering arm on your outdrive & transom mount? I'm thinking that if the cable isn't stiff, then there may be play somewhere that causes you to have to more the cable more than normal to get the steering arm to move.

I have never had the well plug issue nor a leaky float on mine. These happened on early automotive units but are not at all common on the Marine units.

actually if you know where to look there is a ton of aftermarket support for the Quadrajet. www.cliffshighperformance www.quadrajetparts.com keep in mind for the youngsters here who weren't born yet that just about every GM car that had a V8, from 1966 to 1986 came with a Quadrajet, except for...

    1987 Rochester quadrajet

On the Quadrajet there are 2 idle air tubes inside the main body that can get clogged, they can be cleaned with carb cleaner and compressed air, and a very fine (.024") wire....take a look at the pix I put in this post...for great Quadrajet knowledge and support see...

    1987 Rochester quadrajet

If this is a Cobra, make sure that your ESA system works, it should lower the idle speed down to approx 450 from 600 when you trigger the interrupt switch. This is needed so you can easily shift from in-gear to neutral. Normally it does not engage when shifting into gear, the ESA is needed to...

    Missing drive oil bottle ???

Wasn’t it Jay Leno who said most people in my business have one car and a number of wives; I have the opposite and it turned out to be cheaper!

Yep that sounds about right. Is yours original to the boat?

    Are we in trouble?

BTW as far as I know there are no more “new” base 4.3s, all you can find now are reman engines.

    Are we in trouble?

I’m not sure I’d want to be doing business with a dealer that’s not competent enough to do a simple winterization. What else wasn’t done? Rebuilds are hit & miss. Who does it what guarantee etc? I’d pass. BTW get a boat with an outboard and avoid all that winterization hassle!

Volvo Penta 740B raw water cooling

Sounds good, I have wanted to do this for a long time, based on my usage you get barnacles for sure in the lower unit, in fact I wound up having to remove that plastic screen OMC put in there (actually was the same as what was used on the OMC V6 outboards) because it was getting constantly...

got a question about a future V6 to V8 repower...

Scott if I had a machine shop that could help with this, for sure I would, although I think I'd be swapping my Cobras out sooner rather than later lol. Michigan Motorz sells them but they are like 7 grand.

Volvo Penta 740B raw water cooling

OK got a question for you Scott, what would be a good (safe) procedure for using the Barnacle Buster? I have this as an idea let me know what you think... I have one of those winterizing tanks I never used for winterizing (only would have if I had closed cooling) I turned it into a flush tank...

Volvo Penta 740B raw water cooling

Here’s my answer: I have the original power steering cooler on my 1988 OMC Cobra that has been run & moored in salt water for about 20 years (6 month season) it hasn’t leaked yet. But I do have a spare just in case. It only gets flushed at the end of the season.
