    Another winterization question

The problem with using automotive antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is it’s toxic. Unless you drain and recycle it each spring you’re dumping toxic Af all over when you start up in spring. I use either Sierra PG antifreeze or -100 marine AF.

    91 Four Winns 285 5.0 Cobra OMC out-drives

There is an outer and inner transom mount; 6 studs go thru the transom and the nuts are on the inner transom side. Access just depends on the boat. Take a look at parts diagrams on Crowley Marine or Marine Engine. I hope the transom isn’t getting soft….

Coating intake valves/exhaust valves with oil so they don’t get surface rust in storage. Just like the outside of the engine gets condensation so does the inside….

    "Fogging" new VP 4.3?

My brother has a 2020 Chapparal with the new Merc 4.5 that he’s going to ask me to help him winterize. So I’ll have to figure this out in a few weeks. My initial thought is to measure how much gas a standard Merc fuel filter holds and then just mix in the correct amount of 2 cycle oil.

Mercruiser 6.2l 300 (2018 model) Gimbal bearing grease how to?

Yep. I’m in100% salt water my boats moored in it nearly 20 years this is how you make them last. I’d get a drive jack & an alignment tool as well

    winterizing question

What you're trying to protect is the upper engine area, the cyl heads and valves. These will not have a coating of oil and when damp air migrates in and the cast iron cools off the moisture will condense on them and cause corrosion. The cyl walls have some coating of oil but it helps them too...

    Exhaust overheat on 4.3 gxi

Ok I installed the same style exhaust on my OMC Cobra replacing the old bat wings. And yes the starboard side alu exhaust pipe between the upper and lower hoses does get hotter that the port side. Port is about 100* starboard is about 135-140 depending on where you measure it. Water flow in...

    Second Happiest Day . . .

Ted what’s the approximate weight of the trailer & boat? as far as hills, I’m familiar with the route either using the ferry off Long Island to New London Ct. No real hills to speak of there and IMHO a much easier to not having to deal with the heavy traffic resulting from having to drive...

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

Boat manufactures must have a real sadistic streak. Most modern I/O boats I would not even consider buying because on some of them you have to pull the engine to replace a starter or steering actuator. They care more about features like walk thru transoms and rear facing fold up seats than the...

Just bought this Snowblower ,Good, bad ??

The main thing with these machines is not storing them with old gas. Mine all get used every season but something like a snow blower it’s possible that we get no snow or not enough to even run it through a tank of gas. So it might be worth draining the tank and filling with fresh stabilized...

I/O Exhaust Riser life in Fresh Water environment

Water contamination can come from several causes, blow head gasket, rotted intake manifold (prob not likely in freshwater) even leaky manifold to elbow gaskets allowing water to leak back into cyls after shut down. Since this is the easiest to remedy I’d remove the manifolds and look to see if...

    Manifold/riser kit

The kit I posted above uses the older style wet exhaust joint, but enables you to make the conversion without changing the Y pipe (which requires pulling the engine). Not sure if its possible to do the conversion with dry joint manifolds & elbows.
