    Cold air intake

I removed the restrictive huge plastic air muffler on the front of my Jeep Hemi and replaced it with a Mopar CAI. It sounds GREAT and makes servicing easier. Does it add power? Who knows but I love to hear what’s under the hood

    No Spare Tire Included!

Before this pandemic we used to take the 900 mile round trip from Long Island NY to Montreal QC for the Formula 1 race and from LI to Watkins Glen for the NASCAR race. There are parts of the Adirondack Northway that are very desolate with no cell service. I also take a 1/2 drive electric impact...

    Bearing Buddies

I used the spindle lube hubs on my 3500 lb axle from 2004-2021 and never had to replace the bearings all I had to do was grease them 2x a year and I replaced the grease seals when replacing the galvanized backing plates usually every 5 seasons. The bearings never had water in them. The key to...

    No Spare Tire Included!

I don’t buy vehicles with no option for a full size spare. I spent a bit extra to add one to my wife’s 2017 Subaru Forester.

What type of oil and lube to use

PS... I don't think the Merc oil or even the Rotella or Delo have what I'd consider higher zinc level vs standard oils, this was true some time back but now not so much. I did a Blackstone oil analysis on the Delo straight 30 I used to use and also on the Merc oil I switched to about 10 years...

What type of oil and lube to use

PS only thing I can add on oil choice, is many debate the value or lack of value of the FWC rating for marine oils, well when I took my old engine apart after it blew both head gaskets and had water (that's salt water) in the oil for about a week...there was....no corrosion on any of the parts...

What type of oil and lube to use

the 15w/40 is usually certified for both gas and diesel, the S followed by a letter is for spark ignition (gas), the C followed by a letter is for compression igition (diesel) I used to use the Delo straight 30 or 40 and that at one time was certified for both, but about 10 years or so ago, I...

What type of oil and lube to use

I use the Merc/Quicksilver 25/40 motor oil and High Performance gear lube in the outdrive. Since you have a Volvo I’d use what they recommend

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

Old unit removed, you can see it was leaking between the control valve and the hydraulic cylinder, new (used) unit installed, I had to pull both exhaust manifolds to get back in there. Very common on Volvo Pentas, the seals on the hydraulic cylinders leak and VP says they can't be rebuilt so you...

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

Yep, the flywheel housing is in front of it. After you attempt this you will understand why some mechanics hate I/Os with a passion. As a marina owner here in Long Island once said the only thing worst than one I/O….is two! While I most likely will repower this boat if I were buying a newer boat...

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

Ok you're going to be looking between the back of the engine and the transom mount. Don't have a good pic but get back there with a bright LED flashlight and start looking. Right behind the engine, is the bell housing that fits into the rear motor mounts that are part of the inner transom mount...

    Winterizing Question

That’s what I’ve always done drain, poke holes and backfill with either -100 or Sierra PG mixed 50/50 with water. The -100 gives freeze protection to -55*, the Sierra to -26 but can be mixed for lower temps.

Either the 7.3 Powerstroke (International Harvester) or the 5.9 (Cummins) are well thought of. Try to get one just old enough to not have the extra EPA mandated emissions equipment.

    Second Happiest Day . . .

I've heard the same, the 6.0 Ford (Navistar) engines had a lot of troubles, the ones to get are the older 7.3s. I have not heard bad things about the Cummins in the Dodge/Ram pick ups, or the Duramax in the GM pick ups.

    Removed the Wrong Screw

OK the reason why you see water coming out of that hole and will always see water coming out of that hole, is that behind it is the water passage that leads from the impeller to the transom mount. So in order to fix this problem you will need to pull the drive and see if you can fish out the...

Ground location 90 omc cobra 2.3l

Yep replace both with Ancor marine grade cables. Don’t use wing nuts on the cable terminals that connect to the positive & negative battery terminals because they get loose. Use locking nuts or bolt on marine grade clamps. Check that exhaust boot it looks like it’s been leaking.

    Submersible trailer lights

the best lights I found are the LED ones made by Tec Niq http://tecniqinc.com/trailer/ I installed these about 6 years ago and have not had to touch them. Bright and reliable. Before this I was fooling with the trailer lights every year.

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

On some boats with a wide open engine compartment and single engine you may be able to access them, on a twin engine boat the inner ones will be just about impossible to reach unless you have a flex head ratcheting box head wrench. Another job that's a real treat is replacing the steering...
