2002 Volvo Penta 5.0 idles great then dies in gear

The point was that’s what leads up to fuel pump problems....fuel system restrictions that may still exist! And if not corrected will cause the same problem in the future...

2002 Volvo Penta 5.0 idles great then dies in gear

The basic problem with using an electric pump is that it must pull from the tank not push from the tank as in automotive applications. This I believe is due to CG regs regarding electric fuel pumps. So any restriction on the suction side can cause problems. The pump will begin to strain and...

2002 Volvo Penta 5.0 idles great then dies in gear

I think you know the answer to that question Bruce but you must admit you see many posts on boating bulletin boards of problems with V/P electric fuel pumps (paint flakes clogging the pump, terminals on the relays overheating). The guy at cavemanmechanic.com makes a nice living off these...

1995 OMC Cobra 5.8L overheating issues

If the power package is really a ‘95 then it would have the impeller mounted on the engine like a Volvo in addition to the typical automotive style (but marine version) circulation pump. The older OMC Cobras (1986-1993) had the impeller in the outdrive like mine. If it’s overheating that fast...

Looking for bare engine block with pistons

Yep that was warming up. 1200 rpm, I set the slow idle in the water at about 600 rpm to account for the back pressure of the water. Best part is that I taught my son how to back up the trailer he’s getting really good at it lol. Weather here is changeable might get a little from a tropical...

    Screeching/grinding sound from carburetor?

Which water pump, the impeller (rubber) or the circulating pump (automotive style for marine use). When the bearings in those fail they can make noise like that. Also check the alternator and the p/s pump if it has p/s. Same for any idler pulley or tensioner pulley. All have sealed bearings that...

2002 Volvo Penta 5.0 idles great then dies in gear

I think that some years of Volvos had trouble with the terminals on the relay for the fuel pump; there is also the oil pressure safety switch that cuts electric power to the pump if the engine stalls to prevent the electric pump from flooding the carb.

    Volvo exhaust bellow blew

I’m wondering if your exhaust is clogging on one side and all the water is going to the other side. This could cause the side without water to really overheat and cause damage. I’d probably want to inspect the exhaust manifolds and elbows at this point especially if they are original.

2002 Volvo Penta 5.0 idles great then dies in gear

There are a number of common problems that can cause that difficulty: Blocked fuel tank vent Corroded sticking anti siphon valve on the gas tank Corrosion at terminals & relays for the electric fuel pump It takes very little fuel for the engine to start idle or even rev in neutral but under load...

Looking for bare engine block with pistons

Hey Westie man glad you got it! I had this very same problem like 19 years ago when we bought this boat. At the time I knew Chevy engines and Rochester carbs but was not familiar with marine fuel systems. My mechanic found it and explained that the boat manufacturers use a cheap aluminum one...

Starting mercruiser 350 after boat almost sinks

And keep changing the oil and filter. Might take 3 times or more, but getting it good and hot is the main thing. One year I had a cooling hose on the back side of the engine pop off and I had seawater up to the pulleys. I would up replacing the starter and alternator, but the rest of the...

    Impeller challenged...?

try to extend the shift cable guide all the way out and clean out all the crud that is behind it and the bellcrank. This is after sitting on a salt water mooring for 6 months each year. What I described above will get it working well and keep it working well. If you look really closely you can...

    Impeller challenged...?

The other thing that can cause that is water deposits building up around the shift cable bellcrank in the pivot housing. This happens because the gasket may not seal 100% in that area. So first try cleaning any dried up crud there, lube the bellcrank with shaft with motor oil and get it moving...

    Electric fuel pump

Exactly. I have replaced exactly three (3) mechanical pumps in 49 years of driving and 19 years of boating. In fact if I repower this boat I really want to find an engine that can use a more reliable mechanical pump. Probably will have to go with a reman 4.3

    1988 4.3 OMC Cobra guidance

Interesting pix. Wonder what caused the HG to blow? On mine it was different, the fire rings had slits in them which allowed water into the front cyls on each side. Not enough to hydro but enough to put water in the cyls and oil. While running I don't think water was getting in but when shut...

    1979 Mercruiser 5.7L 260 Overheating at 220?

yes and yes it depends on how much water, when it gets really hot the crack you can't see might open up more and leak more water. The only way to tell for sure is pull the spark plugs ground the coil lead and crank it over. Does water shoot out of the cyls? Are the spark plugs showing rust on...
