Try the round Merc/Quicksilver muffs with the metal steel rod clamp these work better than the rectangular dual inlet ones.

There is; get a hold of an OMC on line catalog (we can’t post other sites here so you need to search on your own) and a Sierra aftermarket catalog for parts you can’t get from OMC/BRP. I’m sure you can get stuff right here on iBoats, look around. Keep in mind that Volvo Penta also used the same...

No Power at Ignition or Instrument Panel

Check the fuse for the ignition circuit, I had a similar problem where I had some oxidation on the fuse and no power to anything but the trim system. Pulled out the fuse put it back in and everything worked! That one had me going. Check for battery volts at the B terminal (red wire) at the...

As far as motor oil you can use Merc/Quicksilver 25/40 or Rotella 15/40 or Delo 15/40 if you want something less expensive, I've used the Merc oil for a long time, for the drive you can use the Merc High Performance gear lube it works very well in the Cobra. If you are going to change the gear...

    1995 Volvo Penta 5.8 FSI

These engines were also used by OMC and came with Holley carburetors, you'd have to find a Ford 4bbl cast iron intake manifold for the 5.8, a mechanical fuel pump (although a low pressure electric pump could be used) and as Bruce said you might have to change the distributor. Look the engine up...

If it happens with 2 different carbs then it’s something that would affect both; I guess then besides the fuel pump, maybe a bad load of gas, deteriorated fuel line etc

    Impeller housing overheating

That’s too high it should be 500-600 in gear in the water you can set it at 600 on the water hose on land then it will be close. The drive is not hard to remove as long as the bellows did not leak and allow corrosion to rust up the splines on the driveshaft in the engine coupler.

    Impeller housing overheating

Also: You might want to check the gear oil for water (pull the bottom drain plug and check the condition of the gear oil) Remove the drive & check the inside of the driveshaft bellows for water, and the gimble bearing and u joints for wear & corrosion. This is standard I/O maintenance. On the...

check fuel pressure? that sounds like on both carbs the needle valve might be overwhelmed by too much fuel pressure. However, its a problem I've never had with both the original pump (Carter) and the Sierra I replaced it with 2 years ago. Is the pump original or has it been replaced? How about...

8.1 Volvo Penta keeps breaking serpentine belt

When the engine is running watch the crankshaft pulley and see if it’s wobbling if so the harmonic balancer may need to be changed; then with the engine off lay a straightedge across the crank pulley and all the other pulleys one at a time to check alignment. Lastly check idler pulleys and...

    Impeller housing overheating

My suggestion is to use OEM for impellers and driveshaft bellows because these are parts you don’t want to fail. There are a couple of good online sources for original OMC parts if you look around of if there is an Evinrude dealer local to you they can order them. We can’t post other vendors on...

    Impeller housing overheating

Well if you stay out of shallow sandy water I’d say they are good for at least 3 seasons if you use OE. Each year when I start mine up I judge it by how much water is exhausting under the transom mount. Did you use GLM or Sierra?

    Impeller housing overheating

I think what you might have experienced was the slight mismatch between an OE housing and aftermarket impeller or vice versa. Start out with all OMC original parts and you will not have that problem again; I haven’t and I’ve owned this boat 18 years and probably changed the impeller at least 4...

here's some pix....OMC actually changed to this design in 1991 or so, then during the joint venture with Volvo 94-98 they both used it, and after OMC was totally bought out by Volvo they continued using the same design till the exhaust was changed when cat converters became required. Those 90*...

    Impeller housing overheating

About the conversion...the issue with the one piece design is due to the difficulty in casting them sometimes the wall thickness is irregular and so thin they can crack or rust through easily. With the result that you get water in a cyl. Same thing happened with Mercs one piece V6 manifolds. I...

    Another winterize question

Interesting Ted! I put a gallon of -50 and -60 in the freezer set at zero*F many years ago and found they both get hard; the -100 stays liquid. In fact West Marine which sells all 3 does not recommend -50 or -60 for temps close to or below zero. They recommend only -100 for those temps. So I...

    Another winterize question

and that's the $64,000 question.....does it really protect cast iron? Apparently Merc thinks so because they either recommend or require that the seawater side of the cooling system be filled with marine antifreeze. Never seen a test of this though. I do know that if I keep spraying my trailer...

    Another winterize question

You can use the Camco style kit if you have closed cooling as long as the flow is pressurized with a bilge pump or similar, it will fill the raw water side of the heat exchanger & exhaust system (manifolds + elbows if half system, elbows only if full system) with antifreeze, if you are in an...
