    Do I need a trailer?

Gee, a couple of years ago I pulled the end caps off my galvanized 1989 trailer and looked inside the main support tubes. There was no rust, and I launch in salt water. To be fair, I keep the boat on a lift, so I only use the trailer a few times a year. However, I never thought a 35+ year old...

Mouse chewed through power trim cable

ARCO and Sierra make replacement PTT motors, usually for about $200. If you cannot fix it, you might look around for an aftermarket PTT motor.

Bolts for water pump are rusting

You may have a small leak. You might observe it when running. Now on my 4.3LX that I kept in salt water, each spring the bilge would have some bits of rusty metal, which were unidentifiable

    Do I need a trailer?

Actually, I think it depends on how often you want to use the boat. It will be a minor PIA to load into the truck bed, tie it down, drive to the lake, unload it. Now fish all day and then load it back into the truck bed, tie her down and drive. Also, after you get home, untie and unload it....

    115hp 2 stroke on a Stracraft Mariner 21 ft?

A good rule of thumb is to have 75% of max HP on the boat. If the max HP for that boat is 140HP, then a 115HP is within 75% of max. I assume the hull is aluminum?

    TILT / Trim

If model and serial number are correct, this should be the PTT unit for your motor. An owner's manual or service manual will tell you if it is power trim, tilt or both...

    1994 Ranger boat

Not if they are two cycle. A 150+HP 2 cycle motor should have 3/8" fuel line.

    1994 Ranger boat

Fuel line size is dictated by motor requirements. What motor do you have? Fittings can often be changed. Fuel line can be changed.

    Weight of 1980 4-cyl 80hp?

A DI 2 cycle motor will be a bit less weight than a 4 cycle motor, but not much. Your current motor will be at least 1/3 less weight than either of those. Gee, Merc made a 3 cylinder 90HP 2 cycle outboard for a while. They are only avail used, but at least you would move up a couple of decades.

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Gee, that is bad luck. I hit a rock at 35mph and only snapped off the skeg, which was lucky. Sterndrive Engineering (SEI) makes replacement gearcases for popular Johnnyrudes.

    prov 150 carb question

Unfortunately, RTV doesn't hold up well in a gasoline environment. If the ball just needs sealing, use some of wife's nail polish to seal it. Epoxy glue will work as well. Clean the area with acetone, before applying sealer.

    TILT / Trim

Some of those Mercs only had a power tilt function. A quick look on the crowleymarine site shows that motor (depending on exact model) having one of 3 trim/tilt, tilt or manual tilt components. What have you got?

    Mercury outboard wieght chart

Gee, weight is not usually the issue. The amount of power the boat can safely handle is the issue. Both those motors are likely inline 4, 2 cycle engines. The weight difference is minimal. The power is 60% more for the 800.

1969 85hp Starflite, ignition system change???

I had that ign system on my '59 Fat-Fifty. It worked very well. There was an issue, where if the engine overheated the steel rotor shaft would expand slightly, putting a small crack in the rotor. This allowed voltage to leak to ground, killing the spark. So, if the spark is good out of the...

    17 vs 19 vs 21 Pitch?

That same boat, when the engine was new, would lurch forward at 55MPH, when the throttle was firewalled. The top speed was in the late 60s.

    17 vs 19 vs 21 Pitch?

My speedboat (16 foot avenger w 1500 Merc) could pull two skiers slalom or on two (with deepwater starts), with a 21P prop. I changed to a 23P prop, and it could not get a single skier out of the water (deepwater start). the motor would not exceed 2000RPM pulling the skier. The takeaway is...

Rubberized or Epoxy undercarriage roll on for salt water trailer?

In that case, use the Rustolium Rusty Metal Primer. It is oil based and has fish oil in it. I recommend you brush it onto firm rust or clean metal. It is pretty soft, so cover it with a light colored, brush on oil paint, so any subsequent rust will show thru, and allow you to address it.

82 50 hp tilt and trim

If the piston seal in the trim cylinder is bad, no pump will make it hold trim. Ditto for the control valve, although, I never had any issue with that item. You may be able to find an old trim cylinder rebuild kit. It will take some looking. Then you will need to isolate the leaking piston...

How many very new 4 stroke engines will be running trouble free at age 50 to 75 years old ?

There is one fly in the ointment. With the advent of computer aided design (CAD), it is much cheaper to design new engines, car bodies etc., than it used to be. This means that OEMs can economically change the design of their products more often, to make them better or cheaper. That means...
