Mercury BlackMax 175Hp, difficult staring, and then bogging down.

What year is that motor? What is the color of the spark plugs? What spark plugs do you have in it? What kind of a beep does it have? Solid tone or intermittent? A lot of those motors have an exhaust idle relief hose from the block thru the lower cowling. Make sure that is indeed sticking...

    Rotate Impeller on Occasion

Rotating the driveshaft every few months will do nothing good or bad IMO. I believe the impeller will last just as long either way.

    Rotate Impeller on Occasion

Impellers that are flipped over often fail catastrophically, in short order, and that is bad for the motor.

    1986 Mercury 35hp Throttle/Spark Advance issue

Hanes manuals are not very good. Seloc and Climer are usually worse. A Mercury service manual is what you need.

    1986 Mercury 35hp Throttle/Spark Advance issue

It sounds like some part of the throttle linkage at the motor is mis-adjusted. I am not familiar with your motor exactly but look for adjustments from the throttle arm to the carbs. There are often stainless steel rods that have some threads. You will want to lengthen those to push the...

    Recommended reading?

There was a paperback book that was cheap. I think I got it at West Marine, but it has been a long time. The wonders of the internet...here it is...

Thickness of Mercruiser 140 Manifold at Drain Plug Hole

Gee, bend a paperclip end to a 90*, and stick in in the manifold until you can hook the inside of the casting. Mark the part that sticks out. Now tape and mark the threads of the petcock with the depth mark and screw it into the manifold until it matches the mark.

    Looking for old fasteners

Gee, we used them to put thru the holes in paper, to assemble a manual. Those were more like #10, vs 1/4" though.

    1986 Mercury 35hp Throttle/Spark Advance issue

It is likely that the throttle arm will not move back to idle on it's own. The throttle cable is adjusted to push the throttle closed, and a bit of preload is added to help the operator feel neutral. The carb spring is only designed to close the throttle plate, not move the whole linkage...

    1986 Mercury 35hp Throttle/Spark Advance issue

The throttle itself is pushed back to idle by the throttle cable. The throttle cable should push the throttle arm against the stop, with some preload. However, the carbs have their own spring to close them. That is where you need to look.

    Mercury lower unit cross reference

SEI (Stern drive Engineering) makes these for the smaller Merc engines. They did not have your model number, but maybe one will work. https://www.sterndrive.cc/product/90-205.html

1998 evinrude 225 ocean pro, no spark! Help!

You might get a factory service manual. marineengine used to carry them. Have your model number on hand. Do you have the optical sensor ignition? Are your coils in spec? This info and more would be in the service manual. On my '98 Johnny 150HP engine, battery power is supplied to the...

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

Unlike Jimmbo, I have had very good luck with turning point props. I have 4 or 5 of them. You will want a 19 or 21P prop, likely the 19P prop would give better all-around performance.

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

A cupped prop holds the water much better, allowing more trim and therefore more speed and efficiency. Check out a turning point hustler in 3 blade. They have good rake and cup and are high performance for aluminum.

    Prop for Evinrude V4 crossflow

Gee, you are comparing an aluminum hull with 3 steps to a fiberglass hull from the 70's? I doubt his performance is nearly as good as yours's.

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

Do you have power trim? If so, you will want a prop with cupping, so it may be trimmed up to maximize speed. Actually, I am unsure if you can even get a new prop w/o cupping. What is your beef against it anyway?

    New to me boat

It would be unusual for a cockpit drain to have two scuppers on the same side. You might check them out and see what they are used for. I suspect one is for some other drain, maybe a fish well or something else.

    Prop for Evinrude V4 crossflow

Generally, motors of that HP on std boats cannot spin a large pitch prop like what you suggest. That is likely why you are finding them to be hard to find. 21" pitch is usually the max for them. Are you sure that your tach is accurate? Try Turning point props. They should have at least a 23"...

    New to me boat

Those are scuppers with one way valves. They can help if the scuppers go under water in a following sea, or if the scuppers go under water occasionally due to extra passengers, especially in the stern area. At rest with normal fuel load the scuppers should be above water. If that is not the...

    Lost keys

In the old days, the Mercury dealers had a key for each MerControl. We now have lots of aftermarket stuff. What do you have?
