    need to know if there is fuel in the VST when this happens. Drain the VST to see how much is in there when it shuts down. either the pump has nothing to pump, or the pump is not pumping even if you think you hear it running.

    I would guess someone else was backing the trailer down the ramp and the op was in the boat, started the motor once the lower unit was under water

    without good compression in #2, it will not light off and burn as it should n the cylinder. So it dumps fuel and air into the exhaust where it mixes with the hot burning exhaust of the other cylinders and finally burns. causing the noise you were hearing

    might explain better why you were running the motor when backing into the river. was the boat still on the trailer at an angle? and was it back at the same angle when trying to load it back up? if so maybe you have water in the tank and it is picked up with boat at an angle

    thanks for reporting back what the problem was. But I still do not understand how that would have affected just one cylinder, with only one carb for both cylinders.

    good luck finding one for a motor that old new, but you might find a used one, but no telling if it would be any better then what you already have.

    does it keep running if you throttle up some? does pumping the primer bulb help to keep it running? I know nothing about that motor, but some motors adjust timing and enrich fuel during start up. timing is easy to check with a timing light, but I have no idea if or how that motor would add...
