my issue with a bit of 2x4 between the seat and the pedal is the seat foam deforms a bit, the 2x4 slips and then the tractor is rolling down a hill and running over some hipster on a seqway.

do not run a boat motor without a thermostat. the thermostat is operated as a mixing valve to regulate flow to the exhaust manifolds
big red flag. look for other evidence of freeze damage to the manifolds themselves as well as the motor.
there are dual purpose batteries (starting and deep cycle). however generally starting batteries have thicker plates, deep cycle batteries have more thinner plates.
