Rebuilt my mercarb, now runs awfully

either the float is too high, sticking, or the needle valve isn't holding (sealing off fuel flow).

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I can just imagine the conversations of people putting these together in Fond-Du-Lac, laughing to themselves at the poor guys who actually have to work on them.... The only I/O boat I'll ever have are the older, simpler kind, with wide open engine compartments, carb fuel systems, etc. I look at...

    Stalling, sudden low idle.

The symptoms you mention suggest internal carb problems like a failing needle valve or bit of dirt holding it open. What do the spark plugs look like (the porcelain insulator of the center electrodes)? White = lean, black =rich that will give clues to point you in the right direction. When you...

Best way to get to my boat?

"you're gonna need a bigger boat" lol

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Just be patient with the anti siphon valve and the fuel pick up tube, threaded into alu if it's an alu tank, don't force it use penetrating oil and patience.....

Best way to get to my boat?

How about a platform on the beach with a zip line out to the lift lol.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Seeing as how they were closed cooled from the factory that also adds a lot in a saltwater environment! Looks like you're getting it done!

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Unless you've recently replaced the anti siphon valve and the fuel pick up tube in the fuel tank, try running it on an outboard tank for a test, it might surprise you. I was chasing a fuel starvation when the boat was on plane all season. I rebuilt the Quadrajet, and replaced the points and...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

I think it's easier on the Merc because the shift linkage on the starboard side mounts to the exhaust elbow, so it's not in the way of the fuel line on the Edelbrock, on the OMC which the OP has, there is a bracket for the shifter assembly that also has the large old style trim relays on it that...

    Is this engine oil good?

For the 4.3 if it was a marine engine to start, I'm pretty sure they went to a roller cam starting in 87 or 88, my old '88 definitely has a roller cam. Mercruiser sells a variety of oils and after doing oil analyses with the 25/40 conventional and the syn blend 25/50, the conventional has about...

Best way to get to my boat?

As I have gotten older, I stared paying the boat yard for the water taxi service. I drive to the boat yard (5 min) park, walk in and the owner's brother takes me to my boat on a pontoon boat. When it's time to leave I call them on the VHF and he comes out to get me. Honestly just to not have to...

    Is this engine oil good?

What it sounds like to me is they are trying to avoid paying the premium to get their oil certified. If it is as good as they say, then cost is the only reasonable explanation. If someone was really curious, they could buy a qt of it and sent a virgin oil sample to Blackstone Labs or similar and...

Mercruiser 260 350v8 choke spring? Different clocked positions

Simple and it works! Just make sure it opens all the way up. I found that when I tried a 140* stat, my engine took forever to warm up so I went back to the 160* I have always used even in salt water.

Ok Merc guys can you shed light on this....

OK thinking about this, it appears that (and someone on the hull truth did suggest this) that the tube that goes from the starboard side exhaust manifold to the intake is some kind of crude EGR system to satisfy some emission standard. So it should be only exhaust gas in that tube running from...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

The Holley is longer than the Q-Jet and slightly wider, the Edelbrock is shorter and a good bit wider on the starboard side. In this pic I hadn't changed the fuel line yet....

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

You would need a 4bbl cast iron intake which has the spread bore opening for a quadrajet, both the Holley and Edelbrock are square bore carbs so both require an adapter. There is an Edelbrock aluminum square bore manifold but I recall reading that it won‘t fit with the OMC high mounted...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

The other thing is those one piece batwing exhaust manifolds are pretty restrictive, when I switched to the center riser exhaust (4.0 diameter vs 3.5) the engine definitely seemed more responsive. I would try dropping your pitch 2” first. I run a 15x17 on mine.

    Is this engine oil good?

Anything sold only on Amazon that’s engine related is immediately suspect to me. So they put the specs but don’t say they meet or exceed them unless that’s on their website. There are a number of alternatives you can find the Merc/Quicksilver oil anywhere really, or you can use a 20/50 from the...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

It was a factory option…the 2bbl was rated at 175 hp and the 4bbl was rated at 205 hp. The thing is that they used a Quadrajet which is a good carb but the originals are all old now. So your choices if you’d want a new carb are a Holley 4160 or the Edelbrock 1409. Used 4 bbl intakes do pop up on...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

cars/boats with points ignition could start and run with a pretty weak battery, with EFI, the computer won't turn on! in fact when I had a sticky starter solenoid on my 1965 VW Bug (6 volt) 1200 cc 40 hp, here's how I used to start it... got a spark plug socket, put it onto a long handled...
