    1987 Merc 180 (“470” 3.7 litre) won’t idle

X2 I took a edlebrock off my 65 GTO that ran perfectly (changed manifold and carb set up to tripower), drained the gas out the vents and put it in a box for 3 years, put it back on and it would not idle until I cleaned it

Alpha 1 gen 2 bellows service

Due to where I use and store my boat the drive is 3/4 to all the way up almost all the time and I got 18 years out of them…

Alpha 1 gen 2 bellows service

X2 I inspect yearly. My 2004 boat the OEM ones lasted 18 years and still were not leaking- fresh water lift kept boat. Given that lifespan of the OEM parts doesnt make sense to use aftermarket unless you are selling it

    Prop Swap opinions...

I would use the timing light at rest to verify what you tach reads vs it rather set it up to read while running. Just rev to 3500 in neutral and compare maybe go up towards redline see how far they are off if at all.

yes the 17" 4 blade will be a good one to try. Might also get some stern lift and lower planning speed. In my experience what you give up in tops speed with a 4 blade is more than worth it for what improvements you get over the rpm range where you use your boat most often. Either way I would...

Lower unit oil leak through weep hole after impeller replacement

Yes that should not be there onky the seal in the yellow carrier someone must have changed the carrier and not seen this seal below it

    A couple more I/O questions...

yes that is a Mercarb not a TKS. The mercarb is the younger brother of the Rochester 2 jet, Mercruiser started making their own when GM stopped making carbs back in late 80's early 90s. you can tell it from a 2 jet because the mercarb will have one idle mixture adjustment screw vs two on the 2...

Mercruiser 409 engine severe vibration issue

https://powerboat.world/news/254900/Quicksilver-introduces-409-MPI-Bravo-engine Cant tell if it is a chevy based or not valve covers look different but overall configuration looks SBC based either way the the CPO version is a heck of a lot less than the new ones...

    Prop change on my bowrider

I wouldnt touch the edge - what you describe is typical Would expect that to drop your wot rpm a tad

Lower unit oil leak through weep hole after impeller replacement

Would guess its either the seal below the water pump or the driveshaft seal in upper based on leaking down the shaft below the splines. Although not sure how it would end up inside the pump unless it was the yellow carrier seal. really need to pressure test. Can do the whole drive together, can...

    2 stroke longevity?

No pretty simple and easy to work on. I wouldnt worry too much if you have one that was taken decent care of

Volvo Penta SX-M Mysterious Rattle. Not U-Joints. Not Gimbal.

Only thing I can think is gimbal bearing is not fully seated or the new drive has a bad bearing in it

    Alignment adjustment, witness marks

I’m pretty it’s It’s inverse it witness marks are heavy on bottom then lower the front …as you’ve seen raising isn’t helping go back to where you started and maybe half a turn lower and then check alignment

Lower unit oil leak through weep hole after impeller replacement

what did the driveshaft seal under the water pump look like? the seal carrier (yellow plastic) can deform especially if they run hot or was run dry. Given the age might be worth pressure testing while you have it apart

    2 stroke longevity?

As others have stated depends on how they are maintained. We have a2004 sea doo GTI rfi le , bought it with 100 or so hours and have had it 14 years and up around 300 now. I won’t say it runs perfectly but it has been easy on the wallet if you can turn some wrenches. parts are fairly cheap as...

    Prop change on my bowrider

yes when the Outboards get bigger the hub diameter is the same as stern drive props- you just need to make sure it fits an alpha one. look on ebay for enertia or revolution 4 props they fit both outboards and stern drives. When I got my new to me boat in 2016 I spent 2-3 years trialing props...

Starting boat after 4 years - pre start steps

Did you inspect the bellows and keep and eye on the carb bowl as holleys when they sit tend to leak from bowl gasket - or did you rebuild the carb ?

    Prop change on my bowrider

The spitfire doesnt have much bite in my experience. I get the same WOT rpm with a 23" spitfire as I do a 21" revolution 4. there is that much slip with the spitfire.

    Prop change on my bowrider

As others have mentioned is the tach accurate? Are you able to hit the rev limiter which should kick in around 5050-5100 rpm. If you cant hit the limiter I would verify the tach is correct before changing props. I like 4 blades as for how I use my boat it is more suited. But of course this...
