    Your meter is showing infinity.-----Which is the correct value.----Nothing wrong with the starter per your tests.----That now eliminates poor starter performance.----Something that was not known BEFORE the testing.

    What is the Ohm reading on armature to ground?-----All those copper segments to the wee stub shaft.

    That is very possible ----and very easy to check out.----Don't rush out and buy a new one.----Test the one you have.----I install new brushes in these starters.----Got them from a starter alternator place at $6.50 each.

    The key is to be pushed in AND held in while cranking it over.----That should make for near instant starting.----When motor fires, stop pushing in on the key.----Push key in as needed if motor falters.

    These motors in good condition and the correct starting procedure start almost instantly.----Post the actual compression values here.----And describe in detail how you try and start this motor when cold!

    Agreed---There is nothing special about this motor.---Very little fuel goes into the lower 2 cylinders at less than 1800 RPM.-----Not a setup / motor I would trust for long term low RPM operation.

    Was at the dealer where I worked over 50 years ago.-----Ordered some parts for a 75 model 6 HP Johnson.----They said those 6 hp motors were the " best " they ever built.----Best means they run nice , easy to work on and simple to repair / maintain.-----New stuff has way to much wiring and plastic.

    The plastic oil pump gear is on the crankshaft.----Just a little bit more than a 10 minute fix !!
