Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

Do the points first this is everything for a points type ignition. Recently took and old (1973) evinrude 9.5 out of the basement been about 8 years since last ran. Would barely idle hard to start etc . Point gap should be .020” was .015” on one .010” on the other filed and gapped them starts...

should more water be coming out of prop

exhaust bellows are open to the water and full of water at rest so will make no difference except maybe more noise on plane. Merc also uses an exhaust tube that is only connected on one end , you effectively have the same thing. Also totally normal for water to come out the idle relief ports...

Is this fuel pump oil switch NO, and 1/8" NPT thread?

sounds like someone added the electric fuel pump to your boat as the first switch you showed is the OEM merc one. Typically the three prong one is used as a universal fit when adding a electric FP or in partial replacement engine packages like Michigan Motorz offers. Heres what they offer...

    Need different prop for pulling

Holeshot was ok but it had really high amounts of slip on top end so revs went way up with such a dramatic loss in top speed. I have seen enough folks give praise to the high 5 that for sure my boat is somewhat unique. I just think there are modern 4 blades and even higher performance 3...

    Mercruiser 5.7

As mentioned above the ground wire is a red herring ignore it. I would bet based on intermittently cranking/starting or not you have a loose or corroded wire connection- start with battery cables (both positive and nagative and both ends) also check the cannon plug for loose connection. When...

    Need different prop for pulling

I did not get good results from a high five on my 21 ft sea ray 5.0. The Revolution 4 and Vensura 4 blades I ran out performed it (even the AL Mich Vortex bettered it) . This may be particular to my boat but point being there is not one prop for all boats

    Need different prop for pulling

see what wot is with current prop then can make a reccomendation on how much to go down in pitch. Had a freind with a 4.3 MPI in their 21 ft Larson, had a 19" 3 blade was only hitting 4400 at WOT, went with a 17" VP 4 blade made a world of difference in holeshot. just need to know the...

    aluminum prop comparison

The blade shape , size , and rake are very different from a Revolution 4 so doubt it’s an attempt to copy. It just didn’t perform any different than a michigan vortex, which makes the published info on it look like BS

Problems starting after fuel filter/water separator change

Disconnect it to test bad tach can kill the ignition Had a similar post on the GTO forum I frequent where one of the guys installed a Progression Ignition distributor (electronic can change timing curve on an ap), during cranking his tach was going nuts and no spark. turned out he was getting...

    aluminum prop comparison

I always had fairly good luck with Michigan and Mercury aluminum props, for what they are. Never used a powertech al prop, my brother has a stainless 4 blade PT on his twin vee power cat it works very well and would consider it a reasonably good quality prop. The michigan Vortex props I have...

    1995 Alpha1 G2 bellows question(s)

Mercury and quicksilver are the exact same part. Quicksilver is their label outside their dealer network. Just verify it is an actual quicksilver part not aftermarket

Problems starting after fuel filter/water separator change

At this point no you have enough fuel pressure that is should start. So at this point find out why its not starting. could be lack of spark or something else hence why AD mentioned the scan tool.

Problems starting after fuel filter/water separator change

anti-siphon valve or clog in puck up tube, some have screes in them. I would check for spark first as there is fuel to the rail so would think either injectors are not opening or there is no spark. Simple spark gap tester off coil and at plugs to see if coil is firing and then if spark is...

I have to do a gimbal bearing and bellows etc, I have a question regarding the shift cable. Merc A1 G1 3.0

yes in theory. I would inspect it carefully , assuming its in good shape reuse it. This is what I did when changing my bellows 3 years ago, shifted perfectly so I left it

Problems starting after fuel filter/water separator change

I think fuel pressure should be 40-43 psi not 30. I would assume it would still start with only 30 psi so this may not be the issue at the moment unless it is indicative of a suction side restriction

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

he is referring to the rotor inside the distributor. If it has cracks the spark energy can go to ground instead of through the cap/wires tot he plugs
