    for SBC's there are 4 different starters direct drive vs PMGR staggered pattern (168 tooth flywheel) vs straight pattern (153 tooth flywheel) your 1985 originally came with a heavy direct drive starter go with PMGR.

    there is also a cabin air filter. air intake is just above that, and I believe runs to the fender. I think I recall seeing it when I pulled the fender liner on the GMC to get to the starter.

    without running the coolant thru the drive, you will overheat it. not a good idea even on mercruiser alpha when you switch to the crank driven pump, you must keep the pump in the leg to keep water circulating
