    1978 Evinrude 140 V4 Only firing on 2 cylinders

The 140 and the 115 up till 1985 used the same bore and stroke, and in most cases, the same block(1977 and maybe in 78 there were some differences in the Block). In 85 the 140 became a looper and few, if any parts interchanged between it and the older crossflow block.

    Mercury 1968 200 20hp prop

The Mercs looked much better with the Red Decaling than they did with Blue, or the Ugliest of all, Brown. 68 and 69 were the best of the best

    1978 Evinrude 140 V4 Only firing on 2 cylinders

Welcome to iboats There are considerable differences between the 140 heads and any crank rated 115 heads(pre 1985) You compression numbers are poor. Could be the gauge, so try another. You might have what is referred to as a Frankenrude(a cobbling together of a bunch of parts from several...

That is a Decision that only you can make I think a 68 has Red in its Decal, that alone would make me want to keep it running, or at least keep the cowl

How do you guys mix Gas

All our yard tools are still 2 strokes, We have a couple Dozen still unboxed, so as to have them when no longer on the market. Were able to get some High end Sthil and Husqu**** at very low Clear-out prices. Way cheaper than the Overpriced Electrics,

How do you guys mix Gas

I have enough experience with them to know they are Gutless for pulling Skiers, unless they are triple or quadruple the HP of a 2 Stroke. Sure you can prop it so it has a bit more Low End Torque, but then you are overrevving to get to a Skiing Speed. Government Order, is why they are pretty much...

How do you guys mix Gas

Do not like 4 stroke outboards. Every one I have been on, is slow as Molasses, and A 2 stroke would have across the Lake and back before the 4 stroke got up on Plane. I used to think I/Os were slow accelerators, but they beat the 4 Stroke Outboards

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

Few Flat Tappet Gas Engines are newer designs so there won't be any DI on them, and are best Served with Oil for Diesels, Dinosaur, or Synthetic. My LTs were speced for Dyno Oil(in a Vette, without the Engine Oil Cooler, Synthetic was speced), yet the Oil Life monitor goes far longer than the...

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

I am very skeptical of all the Snake Oil Claims, of running with no oil. Bearings, especially Friction Bearings need Oil, not just for reducing Friction, but also to prevent Metal to Metal contact and to provide a Cushion. Remove the Oil and all that is gone. It doesn't matter what Miracle...

How do you guys mix Gas

They lack the Torque for Acceleration that the old 2 strokes had. Maybe that is why people are now asking if 150hp is enough to pull a Skier, on a 16 ft boat... I have probably been propping boats long before you were born

I would take an old 2 Stroke in a Heartbeat over any of the gutless take forever to plane 4 Strokes.

    1972 Cathedral Trihull Prop Size

What is the Final Timing at WOT, and what is the Advance Curve? This might start an argument, but what cam was used, the Marine Grind? Electronic ignitions usually don't restrict the Voltage while running as there are no points to Burn, unless the EI uses points, and some upgrade systems did...

You say the engine is rebuilt. How was it rebuilt, like an Auto Engine or as a Marine Engine, as in it has Marine grind Camshaft. Same goes for the Carb and Ignition, are they the Originals or some Auto Parts replacements? If those parts are in fact the correct Marine parts, is it tuned...
