1970 River Queen Houseboat new owner here!

My two very good friends who keep boats there have more concern corrosion potential from stray electrical current In marina in this area. i keep my boat on one of the finger lakes in NY, fresh as it gets… since swapping on a big SS Revolution 4 prop i get corrosion, its not just the salinity...

    Old ford 302 no spark

Once timing is set also check your advance is coming correctly. Im assuming you have mechanical weights for advance these can get hung up. Lack of full ignition advance can limit rpm as well.

    cover prop for winter?

There is a roughly 1/4” hole in front of nose cone of lower unit make sure that is clear and it will all drain. Pour a little af down the center of the prop you should see it drain.

    Old ford 302 no spark

Unless there is a LFW, loose effing wire , might check wire from points to negative side of coil for chaffing. Can ground out the points and effectively kill the spark

Volvo Penta 5.0GI to 5.7 swap

i got my base engine from Michigan motors six years ago. A new 5.7 base engine was about $3k or 3200 then. of course a new engine will be more than the rebuilds you mention. on the injectors i dont think so as long as they are clean and work. You may want to cross check this with who ever does...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PLKD timing mark out of scale

Yes fluctuating idle and stall is typically the IAC valve or the filter for it. i thought yours was throttle body injected not mpi, didnt think that has a iac

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PLKD timing mark out of scale

Verify you don’t have a voltage drop during cranking. Id think if you have really good spark it would start instantly. maybe dump a little gas down the throttle body then see if it changes the way it starts . If it gets better that points to fuel issues, if no change would think that means...

Volvo Penta 5.0GI to 5.7 swap

Yeah i was hesitant to suggest it cause it can open a can of worms thread wise. In crate form i think a 383 is like $1600 more. If you want to build your own as Scott points outyou can put it together for similar price. Depends on what you want to do. I bought a partial engine (crate plus...

    Old ford 302 no spark

Look at the way this is wired up. https://bzerob.com/library/ford/ford-starter-solenoid.html this shows the two ways the coil gets power, one in run goes through resistance wire assuming your solenoid is the same pay attention to grounding of body on solenoid i susoect you are not taking...

Milky oil Mercruier 3.0 / how to pressure test engine ?

Yes Rick means as an alternative to acetone test, so you don't have to remove the manifold as you would for acetone testing. Make a blank off plate for where the elbow goes and pressurize with air when you do the block testing.

Volvo Penta 5.0GI to 5.7 swap

Absolutely worth it, per AD's comments you may want to consider a 383. I repowered a 21 ft Sea Ray six years ago, had a 4.3 that PO didn't winterize. The boat was also offered with a 5.0 from factory, so that's what I went back in with... I was thinking a 5.7 would be too much for the boat, I...

Volvo Penta 5.0GI to 5.7 swap

There are companies that reprogram them like https://obd2allinone.com/mefituning.asp https://www.boatunlimited.com/ I'm sure there are others might be worth looking around before you buy

Milky oil Mercruier 3.0 / how to pressure test engine ?

to pressure test the cooling system you need to take the water inlet hose and water outlet hose to the manifold , plug them with pipe fittings such that you can pressurize with compressed air and have a pressure gauge. you should also check the manifold and exhaust elbow as these can leak...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Lou I really respect your experience but on his account I don’t think you are not correct I had flappers in my 91 merc 3.0 fail looked like over cooked bacon . Boat never overheated. Point is they are not the fail safe. Honestly in my option they don’t do much except cover a gross wave coming up...

New Engine Replacement - Engine Died and Hydro locked after 5 hrs!?

Sounds like the cam you have is less aggressive than the stock VP so should be ok. Unless you have exhaust leakage or a crack in head which doesn’t really fit what you are seeing , i also suspect you have more weight in back of boat for what ever reason, necessitating higher risers. That you’ve...
