    79 Johnson tilt and trim

If the motor is turning, and is turning the Pump, the problem is in the Hydraulics. I suggest a Factory Service Manual for that particular motor

    Piston sleeve hairline cracks

    No, the 1980 uses a 3.5 inch bore, and all the 85 from 1968 thru 1978 have a 3 3/8 inch bore

Can I use a Johnson/Evinrude tank on Merc outboard?

Expect to see the Motor run smoother and more Torquey at low speed, but lose some top speed😉

    How to test for spark?

Sure. As for using a Plug. A Spark jumping a 0.030" gap at Atmospheric Pressure means Nothing. Voltage Requirements go up many-fold when the Cylinder Pressure rises(Denser Air makes a better Insulator). That is the reason for Large Gap for testing

    Prop advice needed

A 3 blade 15 should bring it up to 4800. If you want to really kill your speed, a 4 blade is the way to go. And you will need to go even lower in pitch. As for Lower Planing Speeds, a Prop doesn't change the Planing speed of a Boat, that is determined by the Hull. The Bow can be forced down with...

Lot more new boaters and large wakes?

You are a Rarity then. Where I boat, the LL are on plane running Parallel to the Dock(s), sending boats bouncing and Slamming in to the Docks. Speed Limits, 12km/hr in one Bay, with 3 limited Entrances/Exits are completely ignored by them. I have pictures of the Wildlife Officers hauling one...

Lot more new boaters and large wakes?

I had one of the Lake Lice slam in to the back of my Boat one time when I cut the throttle. The rider had a few lacerations, but he would heal, the Boat didn't

Forklift dropped boat on ground - damage?

It should have been Documented, photographed at the time of the Incident, with the Forklift and Operator in the pics. Delays doing so only hinder your case. Also were there any Independent Witnesses?

    How to test for spark?

That is what it is, of course any paint on the Block can interfere with the Spark, so it is hit and miss. The are Adjustable Gap Spark Testers Or with a bit of ingenuity, and a piece of Dry Wood, a couple of Nails, and some wire and clips, you can make your own. Only thing is to space the...

Evinrude V4 120GT Looper Mixture Screw Settings

A tachometer next the engine makes this easier Start at one carb, adjust till it's better, then move to the next carb and adjust it till it better, repeat with remain carbs, then start over again. It may take several passes. Once that is done, try to accellerate, if there is a bog, try opening...

    1978 35hp fuel problems

The only adjustments will the Float, the Sync between the Timing and the Carb, and the Idle Mixture and Speed, all very easy on that engine. When it dies, does it start up again easy, or does it take forever? Motors quite often run fine in the barrel, simply because they are not under any...

Lot more new boaters and large wakes?

Kind of like saying someone who stands on a Motorbike is a better rider. Anyone who stands on a Motorbike or one on a Lake Lice when it is motion really isn't too bright, or swift.

    Evinrude Big twin 40

58 PSI is almost no compression. Was that done with the Electric Starter, or pulling on the Rope? If on the rope it also brings up, are you certain about the year? For a few early years, the 40 hp had a Compression Relief System to make it easier to pull start. Our 63 40 didn't have it. If yours...

Come On Bondo, Marine Parts are just overpriced Auto Parts with a Different Part #, just to rip us off. NOT! It is amazing how many Boaters just do not understand why Marine Engines and their Parts not the same as used in a Car/Truck. Distributors, Starters, Alternators, Carbs and FI are the...
