    you may only be drawing 44 amps at idle because that is all that the alternator has with the engine at idle speed. most alternators do not put out their rated power until the engine they are bolted to is spun well over 1100-1200 RPM (when the alternator itself is spun over 3000 RPM) look up...

    What trouble shooting did you do? If you have points style dizzy, you need to service the points Did you check for signs of water in the cylinders?
