    unfortunately manuals in the 50's had how-to to adjust ignition and set valve clearances. Todays manuals have to tell the person not to drink battery acid. In Volvo's defense, the average DIYer thinks youtube vids are accurate. I agree that maintenance should be part of the owners manual...

    I would stop throwing parts at it and start diagnosing. most of the time your old carb may only need to be gone thru. the "remanufactured" QuadraJet carbs you buy may actually be worse than your old carb. Start with verifying spark measure fuel pump pressure (should be 4-7 psi) verify engine...

    should have changed the impeller when you had it apart. sand will kill the efficiency of the impeller. Overheats kill the motor. do a compression check. If you overheated enough for the motor to quit. you most likely you collapsed the pistons or scored the cylinders.

    yes, unless you changed the cam to a roller cam. you need zinc in the oil. either buy oil with zinc in it, or add zinc to oil that doesnt come with zinc
