    Well----When you turn the low speed needle it has to change the way it runs.----So there is an issue.

    I do not believe there is a high speed mixture needle on a 1973 model carburetor!

    Sure the 70 was the same.-----And had the same issues with top cylinder.----I have a few for parts.-----Not my favourite motor.

    Maybe the tip of the low speed needle is broken off.-----This motor should be an easy fix.----But I can't get my hands on it.----Post a picture of the needle.

    The early 3 cylinder 650 was cross scavenged.----In fact used the same pistons as the 2 cylinder 40 , 4 cylinder 80 and the 6 cylinder in line 90 / 115 HP motors.----The early 3 cylinder 650 did not make the top 10 on the hit parade.

    Agreed,----you have to get rid of the oxidized layer of gel coat.----Wet sand and polish.------But everybody seems to have a different tolerance level for cosmetics.

    The small square pump used on 3 to 25 HP Johnson / Evinrude would be easy to adapt to the crankcase.

    Is there a fuel pump on the engine?----Convert it to use fittings off any common brand of motor?

    Run with a timing light 1 cylinder at a time observe spark behaviour.----Sounds like there may be ignition issues.

    Agreed on the 2 piece driveshaft.-----A good shop might have a fixture to hold driveshaft in the correct position for a pressure test.

    The lower unit in post #11 is a 35 HP !!----------Yes they used " marketing " of a 28 special to get rid of old inventory.

    How did this motor run for you last season ?-----Remove lower unit and see if it turns easier.

    They do not run for very long with half the oil in them.----Describe how you refilled the gear case.
