    1969 Merc 650 - Shifting problems

    There is a strong spring on the clutch dog.-----It takes quite a bit of effort to turn the shift rod CCW to get neutral.----Use a visegrip.

    Check the flywheel key.-----But timing is fixed at the factory.----And if bottom cylinder runs fine the timing for top cylinder will be ok.

    Your location ?----I totally understand why you are working on this thing.----Most shops refuse to work on these SIMPLE lower units.------They are so easy to diagnose and repair in my opinion.-----If in Canada then ----evinrudeparts.ca-----might help you with parts.

    Gone are the days where you could walk into the parts store and get a new " sealed beam " head light.-----It was $6.95 either for a 2 lamp or 4 lamp system.----Now it can be up to $2000 or more + labor for a new unit on some cars.-----Seems that new car buyers are not concerned with cost of repairs.

    18-3007 or factory 47-89983T ??----Factory is best option in my opinion.----Which one did you order ?-----And yes you have to bend the vanes to get them in the housing !

    It is the 90 HP version from about 1990.----I can not tell for sure but I would be concerned if that gasket is on wrong.-----Do a compression test before you spend any beer tokens on this thing.------Note-----It appears that many boats in poor condition are being offered for sale these pandemic...

    Part # of the new impeller ?-----Looks correct to me.-----Vanes on new impellers are not bent like old impellers !!

    Not sure why you are chasing issues with solenoids.----I do not believe there is anything wrong with them !!-----The tubes are plastic for covering / insulating the wiring.----Carefully assemble the solenoids and look for the real problem.

    Sometimes folks are a little reluctant to do some simple trouble shooting.-----Is there a local shop that has a proper test propeller to determine motor power output ?---Any chance the boat has foam flotation that is water logged ?

    I say there is something wrong with the boat or the motor , or both.------You should not need a 13" pitch prop on a 16' boat !

    When the motor is NOT RUNNING it will be in forward gear.-----It shifts into neutral in less than ONE turn ( yes 1 turn ) of the flywheel when 12 volts is applied to green wire.------There is very little that goes wrong with these solenoids.----Not sure why you are digging into this.----What ohm...

    The 17" would bring it down to about 4700 / 4800 RPM.-------I would think that boat if in good condition would run with a 17" pitch prop.-----That is if the engine is putting out the proper power.

    On a hose and on the trailer the prop may spin in neutral.------Has to to with oil drag on the bearings.----Use a stick to see if you can stop the prop.

    Run with a timing light one cylinder at a time.-----See if there is a spark issue in the turns.
