    It might just be an illusion but from my view its in up side down. The flapper should close when water comes up from the bottom, and open for exhaust gas.

    Do my best to stay clear of questions on 470 but do think this may be easy enough for me. From your pic and it being an 1983, it appears you have the exhaust pic on the left. It also uses rubber grommets to hold the flapper in. The one on the right of the pic is for a different type.
