The timing is critical on these motors and is not done with a timing light.

470 mercruiser rebuilt engine install questions

Need to find out if your working with pre BIA or post BIA wiring. I would start first by ringing out the engine harness connector. Put one probe of the ohm meter in a pin and go around trying to find which wire is connected A is yellow and red - ALT to Reg (not used) B Is purple and yellow -...

    Water in the Oil

There will always be rust in the water channel port, the issue is there is water showing up in side the intake. So my guess is the intake has a crack in it or a gasket was leaking. The previous pics didn't show signs that a gasket was leaking from what I could see

    Mercruiser 5.7 EFI no start

My first guess would be the slave solenoid, they are the first to go. Its on top the motor. Turn key one and jump across the top two large terminals on top. Doing this should cause the starter to turn the motor. If it does then its this solenoid, if it doesn't cause the starter to turn...

    Gas Gauge

Most of the wires are doubles, if not triples. You should have a purple coming in and a purple going out to the next spot. You should also have a black going in and back out. There will also be a wire used for turning on the lights in the gauge and going back out. The wire your looking for...

    Breakaway Kill Switch Diagram

The motor dies when the ground is removed from the magneto. The engine will run when the ground is connected. Most kill lanyards have a Normally Closed (NC) position and a Normally Open (NO) position. You need the lanyard to be in the NC position when installed and running. Not on your key...

    Going from tiller to helm?

Howdy Hooking the control handle is straight forward. One cable operates the throttle and the other shifts. These two cables are controlled by the single handle. Not being able to see the control you have I'm going to guess it has a smaller lever which when moved also increases the throttle...

    intermittent alarm

If your motor starts to knock you may not hear it, this is the reason the motor has a knock sensor. The sensor can also be defective and cause the issue. If the Blue wire is routed to close to the spark plug wires it can set a knock fault in the module. Here is how its tested

Truck, Car or Marine Motor Differences

So not to hijack a thread I'm starting this one for some discussion on the topic. There are thousands of threads here and other places which keep saying use a truck engine instead of a car. This topic is not about the gaskets, core plugs or any exterior components. The end point (as I took it)...

    Swim Platform Construction

Don't see the need for the vertical support the transom. The edge or the upper brace will wear into the hull over time. The bottom point bracket covers the end of the angle but should be wider. The lower attaching point can be small because it has only up and downward forces. The upper...

    Swim Platform Construction

My comment was to keep the lower attaching point from going so low, so the brace would need to be made with thicker stock. Yes use a wide base to allow for more attaching points and also to reduce side loading.

    Swim Platform Construction

That's the right idea, I would suggest making them out of some thick material and therefore you won't need to go so far down to get the same support. Use plates on the inside to tighten against. These are a bit on the thin side but still good enough depending on how wide the platform will be.
