Question on 30 year old boat

Generally, there are no manuals for boats. Only about 12-15 boat manufacturers out of about 250,000 ever provided manuals Which drive do you have, the 280 or 290? Looks like a SP290. Is your hydraulic actuator servo valve sticking? The motor is an AQ 230 which is a GM 305 with a holley carb...

Water in oil, could this be the issue?

If you boat in salt water, exhaust manifolds last only 7-10 years max. The manifold to elbow gasket joint fails and leaks water down the ports Not to mention the intake manifolds rust thru

Water in oil, could this be the issue?

Most likely its bad exhaust manifolds However if you had the plug in and water got as high as you say, your starter is now junk, or will fail very soon, and if the alternator was under water, that will fail too. So will any wire harness that was under. Doubtful water got in the crank case...

    Transom replacement

I usually cut the transom oversized before gluing and trim after. But I have done it both ways I pour the glu on and use a v-notch trowel to spread the glue, I start clamping in the middle. Most oozes out

    How is capacity plate attached?

most likely they used rivets that were too short to reach all the way thru the fiberglass. maybe they were in a hurry and wanted to do a half-fast job

    Disintegrating rivets

generally no, not directly. there usually is a volt or two potential difference between the hull and the battery ground. power heads and engines are usually rubber mounted, so there is that isolation. it when people assume they can use an aluminum boat as a ground that most of the time...

    Overheated water shutter debris removal

Running without water you burned all the rubber bits between the elbow and the drive This is the rubber hoses, the rubber bellows and the rubber on the flapper. So get to replacing the rubber bits

    electronic ignition 3.7 lx (470)

FWIW....I have had 100% of the pertronix kits I ever bought fail. I have never been stranded by a set of points. however prior to ripping anything out, simply ground and unground the coil repeatedly and every time you unground, the coil should fire.

VP 5.0 to 5.7 high idle

running the 5.7 on a 5.0 calibration means the motor will be running lean. even with the electric toilet on top (TBI) make sure the throttle cables are not holding the throttle open.

    Disintegrating rivets

there should not be any connection between the electrical system and the boat.

Mercury wear pads missing cause of vibration?

if the motor is severely out of alignment, you can get a vibration. hence the reason I asked when the motor was last aligned
