    50%/50% mix of acetone and ATF is my go-to penetrating oil. however as racer indicated, sealing the bolts prior to corrosion is best. I use permatex #3

    ball gears are past their usable life the thump is probably the dog gear and a mis-adjustment of the cables/shift interupt. What ever you do, dont damage that $900 lower shift cable. a worn shift dog wont get better, it will simply get worse. could also be worn vertical driveshaft splines...

    recreational boats are designed with a 15 year design life and about a 20 year service life (depending on care and maintenance). getting 51 years out of a recreational boat is commendable. Boats from the 80's and 90's barely lasted 15 years.
