    If you look at the diagram I posted you will see the fresh water goes directly to the block and excess goes to the telltale.. when the water in the block reaches operating temperature the thermostat opens an allows the water into the head and then out the exhaust..

    I think that what you don't see is if the thermostat is not there the water just flows freely thru the motor and offers very little cooling..

    What makes you think the gears aren't engaged fully? The design of the shift dogs pull themselves together once they get introduced to each other...

    You have the gist of it, the thermostat holds water in the block until the temp opens it up, then the hot water is released to the exhaust. You probably should get a thermostat.     There are two circuits from the pump, the tell tail is simply a telltale. The other circuit is doing the actual cooling.. maybe this will help...

    Don't think that would be a good test when using muffs, probably better to put boat in lake and then your test will work..

    Crispy shutters won't effect engine temp. There job is to stop water from surging back into the exhaust. How lucky you are is something no one can predict...

    That's ingenious! how did you determine the lever arm length, it seems like you replicated the outdrive in the engine bay.. I suspect you made those easy to remove for access underneath..LOL
