Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

I ended up biting the bullet on buying a used one on eBay for $200. Comes with 5 gauges and collars. I’m sure I’ll use it again. I’m also in north central Iowa where I’m the closest thing to a marine mechanic within 60 miles lol. Still waiting on one bearing and gear and then I’m ready to start...

Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

Yep, I know there’s a special holder and gauge, torque to 70 ft-lbs, and then subtract 0.020” from gap. I was wondering if I can just torque to 70, measure total gap with calipers, subtract gauge length, and then subtract 0.020” to get my shim thickness?

Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

I’m committed to rebuilding this one as I already purchased all new parts. Once I get a good lower shaft I’ll post an update. Spending more than what I wanted but still less than all the used units I’ve seen.

Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

I was afraid of that, I’ll go ahead and get a different lower shaft. It is still dirty in there, haven’t finished cleaning yet. I think the PO let a water leak go and it wreaked havoc on the bearings, gears etc. It was pretty bad. There were metal bits and dirt.

Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

There is some light scoring on the inside of the gear case above the pinion bearing. I lightly filed it, is that ok? There was also some small wear on the lower drive shaft where it rides in the pinion bearing. I smoothed it out with a wire wheel. Is this acceptable? Pics below:

Help with Johnson 150 Pinion Bearing Removal

Hi All, I'm in the process of disassembling a Johnson/Evinrude 150 60 degree gearcase so that I can replace all bearings, seals, and a couple gears. I need some help please with the pinion bearing. Removal looks straightforward, but I want all my ducks in a row. Since this is a '95 model, it...

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

I was hoping to somehow get around needing to take head off, but it’s looking like I have no choice lol. Just sucks the powerhead needs to come off. Might be a little while until I get to it, but I’ll post an update when I get it off.

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

My boroscope is cheap, lol, so not the best, but the cylinders looked smooth. I didn't see any aluminum transfer. I was initially concerned about that piston as well, but I believe it's just the fogging oil I used pooling there. I think the camera is tilted in that orientation.

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

I haven’t removed valve cover but I did boroscope the cylinders. They look ok to me, there appears to be a significant amount of carbon on pistons and some on valves, but I’m unable to see if they hit the pistons, i can see the valves moving but not sure if they’re sealing. Here’s screenshots...

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

What I could see looked ok, but it's difficult with the recessed plug holes. I'll try to get the valve cover off tonight or tomorrow and post an update. It's a freshwater motor in pretty great shape so I'd love to be able to get it going again.

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

That's what I'm afraid of, is a bunch of bent valves. I've got the manual coming so I'll get to work on removing the valve cover. I've worked on a lot of evinrudes, but this is my first 4 stroke outboard. What do you recommend for valve compression tool if push comes to shove?

    2006 DF115 Stuck valves?

Hi, I recently purchased a 2006 DF115 for a good price but in non-running condition. I’ve tested compression and it’s zero on all cylinders. I know the PO said the guy that sold it to him said it died one day and it ended up sitting for 3 years or so. I believe valves are maybe stuck open? If...

Repainting 1995 Crestliner Phantom But Leaving Bottom Bare

Hi All, I recently purchased a 1995 Crestliner Phantom 196 and I'm currently rebuilding the interior. The exterior needs work too though. I'm considering stripping the bottom and leaving it as bare polished aluminum with a painted top stripe, much like a mid 2010's tracker pro guide boat. Has...

1992 Evinrude 150 aluminum in cylinder

Can the crankcase be split with the powerhead still on/piston pulled out by why of using hole in reed box? I saw them do this on a 225, granted that's a different style block:

1992 Evinrude 150 aluminum in cylinder

I think it would have been ok for that that year, 91 and 92 were lower compression years. I technically got it for close to parts motor value, so I guess I "rolled the dice" sort of speak and this time I lost lol. It was also difficult with how it was laying on the ground to do it, though it...

1992 Evinrude 150 aluminum in cylinder

Hello all, I just purchased a 60 degree 1992 Evinrude 150 from a dishonest seller and discovered it had a cylinder with 0 psi compression. The other 5 cylinders were reasonable at 85-95 psi. After pulling the head I found what looks like aluminum chunks coating the cylinder wall. Also looks like...

    Help with fabricating aluminum windshield.

Hi All, I have a Crestliner deck boat that'd Id like to fabricate a dual console windshield for. I'd like to make something like what's on the new Crestliner Commander (pic below). Kind of what you see on those heavy duty alaskan aluminum boats. I'm confident in making the frame, but know...

Torque Specs on Exhaust Extension Plate and Power Head Mounting Bolts Mercury V6

Well I lifted her up and put 25 on the middle 2 and 50 on the back 3. I took pics of the gasket, it got some oil residue on a corner but hopefully it’s ok. I rewiped the powerhead mating surface and spot checked the gasket.

Torque Specs on Exhaust Extension Plate and Power Head Mounting Bolts Mercury V6

Uh oh, I might be a little low on the 5/16 ones. I ended up going off the spec for head cover (same size bolts) which was 150 in-lb or 12.5 ft-lbs. Do you think 12.5 ft-lbs is enough on those? I can lift powerhead back up, but I don’t want to risk ruining my gaskets. Thanks again for the help...
