1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

Our power loss problem is intermittent, but it can be consistent at times, other times it seems like we can "get past" the 'iffy' area of throttle position and get it up to 3200 rpm. Can 'protection mode' be intermittent if a sensor is on the edge of failing? When the mechanic showed me what...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

Thank you @alldodge and @bruceb58! We will check the wiring for any obvious damage or corrosion. The mechanic said he wanted to come back a run a test on engine oil pressure. He didn't give me any feedback on his first check when he saw the injector firing intermittently and said we had a...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

UPDATE: After hunting down our problem we seemed to focus in on fuel delivery, in other posts I was made aware of the Vapor Separation Tank, and so we had a mechanic come out to check. He ran it up to RPM in the slip and it did hesitate on occasion. He was able to remove the Flame Arrestor...

1996 Horizon 220 5.0Fi raw water pump issues.

Thank you @alldodge, my brother said the same and it is better safe to use the mildest option than be sorry. When I searched for the type of rubber used on impellers it seemed to be oil-resistant, but I will check them and clean them off.

1996 Horizon 220 5.0Fi raw water pump issues.

Our impeller didn't have the correct gasket, so I reused the old one and just smeared a little sealant on both gasket surfaces. We also lubricated the impeller with vaseline even though it wasn't going to run dry at all. Just for your info. Before I put the fan belt and output hose back on...

1996 Horizon 220 5.0Fi raw water pump issues.

We just replaced impellers on the same type pump and we had much more wear than you show. We were going to re-face both sides, but we weren't sure about tolerances and didn't, we just put in the new impellers and they seem to pump just fine. I did use a little sealant on the back plate as I...

Where does this little hose go from the thermostat housing?

I was able to get back and remove the small cooling hose going to the VST on each engine. It didn't look corroded in the hose, but I think the VST on each engine could maybe be clogged. Could I blow through that cooling hose to see if there is resistance or a clog in the VST? Shouldn't...

Where does this little hose go from the thermostat housing?

Thank you, that is what we ended up doing. A cork and a keychain (Ha Ha) worked great, and new impellers cooling well too. Is it hard to replace that hose at the rear connection? OR would I have to wait for haul-out and outdrive service? From the throttle body stud back the engines are under...

Where does this little hose go from the thermostat housing?

Thank you, my engines are 1998 5.0GiPBYCCE and the hose goes to the back of the engine. My hose goes to the back of the engine along the valve cover. Thanks to you directing me toward fuel cooling, could it go to a VST (Vapor Separator Tank) at the back of the engine or throttle body? I am...

Where does this little hose go from the thermostat housing?

Where does this little hose go from the thermostat housing? I tried tracing it but I don't have much room to see where it goes. I also tried searching the web and exploded diagrams. Judging by how rusty my other large hoses were, this one has to be bad since it is so small. I want to...

Broke off Starter bolt in the block

You might be surprised. On a car I had built years ago I had just put a new engine in and I was using the same clutch linkage and pivot in the block from before. It wasn't long after driving it for a while before the pivot pin in the block sheared off. It was tough to access with anything but...

Can't remove flame arrestor due to clearance

Thank you! If it ain't broke... especially with 23 year old TBI that is still working good, ha ha.

Can't remove flame arrestor due to clearance

Thank you, I meant spraying down the throttle into the intake while the engine is running, like this Sea Foam video shows. The engines start, idle, and run fairly smoothly now (980 hours), so I worry about screwing that up, ha ha.

    Overheating after impeller change

I am about to change impellers for the first time on new to me older 5.0L's. I opened one raw water pump and the housing and back plate were fairly worn. And it appeared that the old impeller had molded to that worn housing (still looked good and cooled well). So I wonder about putting a...

Can't remove flame arrestor due to clearance

Thank you @alldodge, I will give unscrewing the stud another attempt, it seems like the only way, and maybe if I lift the arrestor straight up I can still get to the bottom of the stud. The stud is loose and turns easily, but lacks the room to move due to being offset/bent. I am trying to be...

Can't remove flame arrestor due to clearance

I can't remove the flame arrestor to clean it. It's'98 5.0Gi TBI injection has the offset stud and two injectors in the way. In searching online it appears that the stud unscrews, but we can't do that with the flame arrestor in the way. Any ideas? Maybe to clean it we can just tip it back...

What are the essential tools to keep on board?

I just wanted to share that while we will never travel out of range for Boat US towing, I think it is a good idea to have tools. It could take hours for a tow to arrive and in that time you might be able to fix something or at least band-aid it up. Even for quick maintenance, if you notice a...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

Thank you, since we have TBI and only 2 injectors I am hoping we don't have a problem with an injector or fuel. We don't notice any bogging or flooding, only the more predictable Engine Protection Mode RPM change. The oil coming up the dip stick seemed to only happen the first time you check...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

UPDATE: Thank you, I wanted to give an update. We took some oil out of the Port engine, it was a little high on the dipstick. Then we took it out for a test run and it ran smoothly through the RPM range. No more protection mode. We tested the engine harness for fault codes and it never read...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

Thank you I appreciate the help, I was able to get some pictures of the raw water pump and it looks like it is needing service or replacement. I am trying to figure out the part number for this VP raw water pump. Where would I find the serial number for a 1998 5.0 Gi ?
