    Boogered Carb

Well you were a novice once too R1. I appreciate the advice, but a little less snark would also be appreciated! So why the heck is the nozzle designed this way? Is it supposed to not be removable? Thanks for the reply, it bolsters my confidence that this motor may be good to with just a little...

    Boogered Carb

Cleaned the carb on the Evinrude 25 today. S/N: 322314 Pretty simple, not very dirty. Could tell though that some bumbler had been in there previously. Missing a bowl screw, main jet looks bent. Could not straighten or remove main jet, even though it has slots that look like a screwdriver could...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Point well taken. It just looks sorta ghetto to me. Like somebody added it. Oh well one more part that will have to be transferred over I reckon. Beginning to think it would be easier to put the lower unit from the rude on the johnny, but the rude is in such nice shape, almost like new. I'm not...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

How so? Was my explanation hard for you to follow? Allow me to elaborate. What I see is a bunch of terminals that can come loose, get wet, become contaminated, and might well need to be removed and cleaned from time to time. Just seems like an odd way to do things. What am I missing?

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Because it looks like a HS science project? Seems like it would have plugs, that's all. Preferably with locks like most cars do.

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Gotcha. Thanks. Concentrating on getting the rude serviced and running. Then I'll get going with transferring the rest of the goodies from the Johnny. Noticed something odd yesterday. Looks like the electric start motor has a carb with a bump out on it to mount the choke solenoid. Guess if...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Thanks for all the help and encouragement. I pretty much take my time with everything. Even though have done a fair amount of wrenching, I'd never claim to be a mechanic. Much better at taking stuff apart than putting it back together. I was wondering if the motor was capable of charging the...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Yep you're pretty much correct R1. As usual. Just something to putter around with. Goal is to use this one on my only current boat, the Mirro. Since it's a real "beach" to pull on, I want to convert it to electric. Seems like I could get away with simply running power from the batt to the...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

I agree, need to do a bit more research and look at some parts diagrams. I'm fairly certain though that these two engines are "basically" identical. The change occurred in 77 and from what I gather OMC stayed with it for a few years. Spent an hour or so comparing the two side by side and the...

    Carburetor clean versus carburetor rebuild

It is enjoyable pursuit though, no? No doing it over and over. Just one try and then get a kit. No big deal. No real sense in putting un-needed parts in her, right? I think some here look at things from a tech's viewpoint where time is money. My time is my own and I have an abundance of time...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Anyone care to put me on the right path here by answering my questions? Sure would make my life easier!

    Carburetor clean versus carburetor rebuild

Well I look at it this way. It takes what an hour or two to remove a carb, hose it out and reinstall it? For such little bit of labor and $0 cost there is nothing to lose in giving it a try. If it doesn't work, get a kit. I prescribe to the KISS school of thought. Why put a kit in it if you...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Guess I'm on my own with this one. That's OK, I'll suss it out. Just figured this was a common upgrade.

Defective kill switch/button maybe grounding out your electrical system? Just a guess.

    Carburetor clean versus carburetor rebuild

I've cleaned a lot of carbs in my day, but if I ever "rebuilt" one I can't remember when. I make my own gaskets when needed.

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Picked up a Johnson donor motor today. Want to put the starter and all the related bits onto my Rude. They are about the same year, but more different than I thought they'd be. The Rude is a 77, the Johnny a 78 (I think). Both have a power pack. Has anyone here tried this before? Can I just bolt...

Fastwin 18 - Help IDing Part

Thanks for the clarification gentlemen. It was the thought that I was throwing the timing off that had me hesitating to mess with this screw. I did not use a VOM to set the points, but I checked an rechecked them with a feeler gauge until they were as close as I could get them. I was pretty...

Fastwin 18 - Help IDing Part

So this screw IS for adjusting how low the engine idles, BUT there is another way to do it? Yes, the motor will stop running without using the stop button by throttling down which is aggravating and causing me fits while docking.

Fastwin 18 - Help IDing Part

Is this part on my 65 Fastwin for adjusting the idle? Motor runs so smooth that sometimes I idle it down too low and she dies on me. Is this like an idle stop? Is that the proper term? All I want to do is control how far down I can rev the motor so it doesn't die on me when I'm trying to dock.
