adding trim and tilt fluid-1986 Mercury 90hp side fill

My trim and tilt slowly goes down but has no leaks. This morning I decided to top off the fluid. I raised the motor and locked it in trailering height. I bled off the system and then opened the fill spout on the side of the bracket and topped the oil off until it ran out. It did not take much. I...

1986 Mercury Inline 6 outboard intermittent or no reverse

Thanks for your replies--- I tried to adjust the cable one last time and could not get it to lock up in reverse. When I had the cable loose, I shifted it into reverse by hand while I kicked the prop and still could not get it to lock up. In Neutral, I pulled the lower and installed the most...

1986 Mercury Inline 6 outboard intermittent or no reverse

Thanks for the reply. The cables seem to be fine. I don't see any damage at the barrels, and no sign of fraying or kinks. I have some others somewhere around here but they are used as well but in a pinch, I guess they may tell me if the original cable is damaged. There isn't any difference...

1986 Mercury Inline 6 outboard intermittent or no reverse

my 1986 90 hp TOP does not want to shift into reverse. Oddly enough it will go into reverse on the muffs and once at the ramp when I first got the motor running. Yesterday when I thought I was going to do a little fishing on my maiden voyage, I could not get the motor to grab reverse. I tried...

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

I have solved the problem through research on the internet and a random picture of a set of solenoids. A simple solution to weeks of asking. The PO did not restore the grounds to the small posts on the solenoids. A picture on the internet showed how the wires were supposed to be connected. After...

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

Thanks for your reply. I have the red wire coming from the switch ( fused ) connected to the positive on the up solenoid where the positive wire ties both the upper and lower solenoids together. I am thinking that since I get power to the trim unit when hooked up to the large terminals that the...

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

Since I have made this video, I have replaced the solenoids and still can not get the trim to actuate when the wires are connected to the small terminals on the solenoids. When hooked to the main posts on the up and down solenoids the switch at the controls works just fine but seems like it is...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

found what I needed to fix the wiring thanks. Was a good piece on the internet that identified the wires. Now if I can figure out what caused the main fuse to blow and knocked out the power to the starter and the trim I will pretty much have this thing ready to go Crappie fishing.

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

Well, I found the fuse that was burned and I can start the motor now and operate the trim. However, this does not tell me why I burned the fuse, to begin with. Cannot see any problems upon visual inspection but my eyes are not so good anymore so I could be missing something easy or obvious to...

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

I put this motor on the boat and started hooking things up. I could start it fine but could not get the trim to actuate from the controller. I changed the position of the wires at the solenoids and got it to work but it was a little weak current wise. I ran it down to a stop and now I can't...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

While I am waiting on parts to arrive, I have installed an RPM and WP gauge. My controller has 5 wires coming out of the front of the box. I can't seem to find a schematic that identifies these wires. All I find is a general plug to the tac but not 5 wires. I am by no means proficient at wiring...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

For all who are giving me a hand with this, I do appreciate your time and effort. Although I have some basic mechanical ability, most of this is new to me. I have worked on merc outboards a little over the last 3 years but aside from rebuilding carbs in an old 1974 85 hp and dropping the...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

Thanks for your reply--- I appreciate the part numbers, I did finally find some at marineparts.com I tried boats.com by calling them since my ser#s did not match their inventory. After being on hold for more than 20 minutes a guy finally answered and then told me that since I needed parts info...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

Well, the only WP gauge I could find was a 2-30 psi so I guess I got what I got. Did not see any under that psi. I seem to be having trouble finding carb kits for my 1986 90 hp inline. Ser# A903----- Nothing seems to correspond to that ser # set. I live in a very small town and there really...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

first off thanks for your replies. I have another short video that I will post. By tapping on the carbs I got the floats to un-stick and it runs pretty good now but after I solve some more issues, with all the help i can get, I plan on rebuilding them and the water pump. I have been looking for...

1986 Mercury 90hp inline 6 carburetors spitting gas

Well, I removed the Autoblend oil injection unit, plugged off the WP line ( don't have the gauge yet ) hooked up the fuel and the motor fired and runs. However, the upper and lowermost carbs are spitting fuel. Is this stuck floats? see clip

    1986 90 hp Mercury inline 6

You are correct. This 1986 90 Hp Mercury motor uses the " Autoblend" oil injection system. I looked through the papers that I got with the motor and found the original service booklet on the unit. It has explained a lot to me but I want to remove it so the user booklet does me no good. I do see...
